Department Information

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) primary mission is to protect North Carolina's environment and natural resources. Division Information

The primary purpose of the Division of Waste Management is to protect the public health and environment through assuring that solid and hazardous wastes and underground storage tanks are managed properly, and existing contamination is cleaned up across the State of North Carolina. This is accomplished through the Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, Superfund and Underground Storage Tank Sections, and the Brownfields programs.

Description of Work

This position is physically located at 217 West Jones St. Raleigh NC 27603.

This position in the Pre-Regulatory Landfill (PRLF) Unit within the Inactive Hazardous Site Branch, Superfund Section addresses contamination at pre-1983 landfills.  The Hydrogeologist will be responsible for performing the work of project manager, contract management and directing the technical work associated with the assessment and mitigation of contamination at these PRLF sites.  The Hydrogeologist will make assessment and cleanup decisions, review, interpret, evaluate data and reports, track work and costs.  Activities also include coordinating public participation to facilitate site cleanup and abate health risks.  The work will require some travel to project locations within the state.

Qualified applicants must possess an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

1.     Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of environmental laws and regulations.
2.     Thorough technical working knowledge of engineering, hydrogeology,chemistry, and toxicology.
3.     Experience preparing and reviewing risk assessments, risk management plans and communicating risk information to authorities and the public.
4.     Ability to prepare and understand documents that express technical information, as well as excellent communication skills both orally and in writing; ability to interact and communicate effectively with people having diverse backgrounds.
5.      A self-motivated professional with outstanding time management skills; must be able to function with limited supervision, follow directions, plan and schedule work, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and manage stressful situations effectively.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements



Bachelor's degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university.

Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists.
