* Post Doctoral Fellow 1 - Arctic Climate Change
Job Title: Post Doctoral Fellow 1 - Arctic Climate Change
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Type: Full-time, Exempt
Position Term: 1 year with the possibility of extension
Application Deadline: This position will be posted until 1/26/20, or until position is filled.
Relocation: No relocation package is offered for this position.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.
Please Note: Cover Letters are strongly encouraged.

Where You Will Work:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

The Research Applications Laboratory is one of seven laboratories within NCAR<https://ncar.ucar.edu/who-we-are/labs>. Its mission is to conduct directed research that contributes to fundamental understanding of the atmosphere and related physical, biological, and social systems; to support, enhance, and extend the capabilities of the scientific community; and to develop and transfer knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth.

The main goal of the Hydrometeorological Applications Program is to provide relevant information to high-impact weather, flood warning, and water resource decision makers through directed and basic research and development in hydrometeorology, aerosol-precipitation interactions, very short term precipitation nowcasting, cloud microphysical modeling, and winter weather.

What You Will Do: This is a new, full-time 1-year term position with potential extension to 2 years for a post-doctoral research fellow at NCAR. The new hire will conduct regional climate modeling research focused on precipitation, land-surface, and permafrost changes across the Alaska and the Yukon River basin as part of a new NSF-funded Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) project. The successful candidate will use the Regional Arctic System Model (RASM) to develop historical and future regional climate simulations with the NCAR led Community Terrestrial Systems Model (CTSM). While the exact research questions can be aligned with the successful candidate's interests, the general project goals are to assess projected changes in Arctic precipitation, temperature, and subsequent impacts on regional hydrology including snowpack, soil moisture, permafrost, and runoff generation.

In addition, there is opportunity to improve CTSM permafrost physics and the performance of high-resolution Arctic models. The post-doc will work with a broad research team at NCAR dedicated to regional climate and CTSM modeling, and will also interact closely with an interdisciplinary team of physical and social scientists at the University of Colorado, the US Geological Survey (USGS), and Native communities across Alaska and western Canada. The position is located within the Hydrometeorological Applications Program of the NCAR Research Applications Laboratory in Boulder, CO, USA.

Responsibilities:
* Perform multi-decadal regional climate simulations for historical and future periods using multiple global climate models or other future climate scenarios (e.g. pseudo-global warming) through a co-development process with Alaskan Native and Canadian First Nation stakeholders.
* Test, evaluate, and improve as necessary permafrost physics within the land model component of the regional climate modeling system.
* Evaluate simulation output across multiple variables related to atmospheric and indigenous processes and prepare simulation output for input into application models such as river temperature and ice or fish biologic models, and prepare community datasets.
* Communicate research results through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations to Alaskan Native and Canadian First Nation stakeholders and the general public, and presentations at scientific meetings.
* Develop a coupled land-atmosphere RASM configuration for Alaska and the Yukon River basin.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:
* Ph.D. degree in atmospheric or hydrologic science with expertise in regional climate modeling and/or land-surface and permafrost modeling.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge and understanding of climate change and climate modeling.
* Knowledge and understanding of hydrologic processes important for runoff generation.
* Skill in running and analyzing regional atmospheric models or skill in running and analyzing complex land-surface or hydrology models
* Ability to manage and manipulate very large, computationally intensive simulations on high performance computing platforms.
* Ability to conduct graphical and statistical analyses of multi-dimensional datasets (time, space, variable, ensemble).
* Familiarity with UNIX, Fortran, NetCDF, Python, and high-performance computing.
* Ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Desired (not required):
* Seasonal snow cover or permafrost landscape experience.
* Skill or experience in developing, implementing, or modifying parameter estimation and/or parameter regionalization processes.
* Skill or experience in developing, implementing, or modifying physical process parameterizations
* Familiarity with GIS concepts and geophysical datasets (e.g. soils, vegetation)
* Ability to interact productively with scientists and engineers across NCAR, universities, and federal agencies.
* Strong skills in written and oral communication of research results, including in an interdisciplinary context with non-expert stakeholders.

*Please Note: Cover Letters are strongly encouraged.

Applicant Notes:
* Encouraged to apply : Please note that while the position description details both minimum requirements as well as desired skills and experience, we want to remind applicants that you do not need to have all the desired skills and experience to be considered for this role. If you have the passion for the work along with experience in a related field, you are encouraged to apply. We can provide on-the-job training for the rest.
* Pre-employment screening: All newly hired employees are subject to pre-employment screening.
* PII - Personally Identifiable Information" (PII) is non-public information that is personally identifiable to a single individual. PII may include information such as name, address, email address, phone number, social security number, passport number, credit card information, and other related information. You may be required to enter or submit your PII to a third party on behalf of UCAR for the purpose of identity verification in order to conduct transactions as part of this position. You may also be required to handle PII of UCAR employees as part of performing the requirements of this position.
* Work Location requirements - This position is subject to work location requirements for obtaining access to facilities and research systems. These requirements may include a combination of national security checks, credit checks, fingerprinting, or other security clearance requirements. This position is open to U.S. Citizens and Green Card holders.
