Job Description
The School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is seeking to
fill a one-year postdoctoral position focusing on landscape scale forest
management research in the southwestern United States (U.S.). Research will
focus on long term landscape modeling of wildfire and restoration treatments
to examine an array of management issues including fire feedbacks,
fire-management synergies, economics of restoration, fire suppression
strategies, and climate-fire interactions in the southwestern U.S. The
project will leverage a new forest landscape modeling system created from
the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) and the large Fire Simulator (FSim).
The researcher will be responsible for calibration, designing scenarios,
conducting simulation experiments, writing peer-reviewed publications, and
presenting results at professional conferences. The research will be
performed in close cooperation with local land managers on nearby national
forests. The selected candidate will be eligible for benefits, and the
possibility of a one year extension depending on performance, program needs
and availability of funding. The selected candidate will work closely with a
research team that includes students and faculty at NAU, and researchers
from the Rocky Mountain Research Station.

NAU is currently engaged in an Organizational Growth and Effectiveness
Initiative, which focuses on positioning the University for future success
of its operational practices. As a result, some aspects of this position may
be subject to change, such as, but not limited to: duties, titles,
reporting structure, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
* Completion of a Ph.D.
* Experience working with the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS)
* Experience working with wildfire simulation software (e.g. Behave,
Nexus, FlamMap)
* Knowledge of the Large Fire Simulator (FSim) and Landscape Simulator
(LSim)
* Experience writing syntax in R and Python scripting languages
* Quantification skills as reflected in doctoral research
Preferred Qualifications
* Completion of Ph.D. in Forestry, Conservation, Quantitative Science,
Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, or similar fields, and have a
strong background in research and writing peer reviewed publications.
* Experience working with the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), and
Keyword ComPonent (KCP) files, Ideally, experience would include model
calibration and extensive runs in FVS.
* Experience with wildfire simulation software with a focus on
FlamMap, FSPro and FSim family of models. Ideally, this would include model
calibration and extensive rund in any of these models.
* Experience writing syntax in R and Python scripting languages,
including object oriented programming and looping
* Strong quantification skills as reflected in past accomplishments,
research and publications
* Strong writing and presentation skills
* Experience with Geographical Information Systems and databases
* Knowledge of fire ecology and forest ecology
* Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of fire ecology, forest ecology, and climate change
effects
* Experience with simulation modeling
* Experience with scripting with computer code
* Applicants must possess technical capacities and/or expertise that
does not currently exist at NAU and that will therefore increase NAU's
research and training capacity
Background Information
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following:
a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and
a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be
required to complete a fingerprint background check.
Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to
participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with
verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.
Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department
releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal
law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the
school's policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security
including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual
offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable
crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year's Fire
Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for
Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Salary
The budgeted salary for this position is $58,671.
Commensurate with experience.
**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the
selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal
salary equity considerations, and available market information.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory
time for additional time worked.
Benefits
Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal
year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona
Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service

NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including
generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10
holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family
members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay
period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees
will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
