Job Description
Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow I - CHMCLM
Location: Boulder, CO
Type: Full-time, Exempt
Position Term: 1 year, with the possibility of extension for another year
Relocation: No relocation package is offered for this position.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.
Where You Will Work:
Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world’s premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
What You Will Do:
The successful candidate will conduct independent research within the Asian summer monsoon
Chemical and Climate Impact Project (ACCLIP), which includes an airborne field campaign in
2020, using the NCAR Gulfstream V HIAPER research aircraft with the flight operations from
Japan.
The ACCLIP aims to provide critical in situ measurements to characterize the chemical
complexity of the ASM UTLS outflow, the chemical composition and size distribution of the
Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (ATAL) aerosols, and the water vapor distribution of the UTLS
in the region in relation to the tropopause and dynamical background. These data will be used
in process studies and model evaluations in global community models used to assess chemistry-
climate interactions.
Responsibilities:
As a member of ACCLIP science team, the successful candidate will conduct independent
research on Asian Monsoon transport and its impact on UTLS chemistry and aerosol
distribution. The work includes:
· Pre-study for airborne field campaign planning, using reanalysis data and chemistry
climate model output
· Participate in field campaign as a member of operations center staff to support the lead
PIs for flight planning, forecasting and nowcasting, flight monitoring and other required
duties.
· Perform data analysis integrating in situ data, satellite data, and models post campaign
to address key scientific questions of Asian monsoon transport impact on UTLS chemical
composition, aerosol distribution and composition and short-lived reactive species.
· Participate in science team activities and interact with other team members including
instrument scientists and modeling groups.
· Communicate research results through science team meetings, publications in peer-
reviewed journals, and presentations at conferences.
What You Need:
Education and Years of Experience:
· PhD. degree in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, or related discipline with expertise in dynamics, chemistry and transport analysis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Experience using global chemistry climate models
· Demonstrated skill in model evaluation using in situ and/or satellite observations of atmospheric composition
· Demonstrated ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
· Experience developing data analysis and visualization software in IDL, NCL, and/or Python
· Familiarity with UNIX and data formats commonly used in atmospheric sciences, including NetCDF, HDF, and GRIB.
Desired, but not required:
· Research experience in upper troposphere and lower stratospheric dynamics, large scale and convective transport, integrating model output, satellite data, and in situ airborne observations
What’s in it for You:
· Compensation
· PTO
· Paid Holidays
· Tuition Reimbursement
· Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision)
· Retirement Plan
· And more!
