Job Description

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) seeks a Staff Soil Scientist at the Research Associate level to assist in activities pertaining to soil characterization, geomorphology, soil and surface water hydrology, and terrain analysis in support of current DoD funded projects at DRI. This position will be supported through September 2020 and may continue based on availability of funding and on quality of work performance.

This position involves research support in four overlapping areas:

     * Assist in field-oriented studies where soil, geomorphic, resistivity, and hydrologic data are collected and analyzed in support of project objectives as required.
     * Assist in the analysis of soil surface conditions as related to dust emission potential.
     * Assist in the entry of field and laboratory data into spreadsheets and databases as required, and ability to assist in the analysis of collected soil, geomorphic, and Quaternary geologic data.
     * Perform laboratory duties in the Quaternary Pedology and Soil Characterization Laboratory as directed.

In addition, the candidate should be familiar and comfortable with basic report writing and technical editing and be willing to learn how to collect instrument data, often in extreme environments.

Other responsibilities include assistance in a wide variety of Quaternary geologic, soil-landform characterization, soil-hydrology, and geomorphic projects as opportunities and needs arise. These efforts may include mapping of landforms, Quaternary geologic units, and soils, description and sampling of soils and sediments, performing soil infiltration measurements, working with Quaternary stratigraphy, sampling of materials for geochronology, geoarcheology, and cultural resources identification, and general support of field research activities.

Required Qualifications

Note: the level of this position will be filled based upon the qualifications of the candidate

     * Staff Research Scientist position: Master of Science Degree in Soil Science or related fields from a regionally accredited college or university and completion of a Master Thesis with a soil-based focus.
     * Postdoctoral Fellow position: PhD in Soil Science or related fields from a regionally accredited college or university.
     * Basic experience with the mapping, description, and classification of soils.
     * Ability and willingness to work in harsh field conditions for extended periods of time (i.e. southwest deserts in the summer, cold regions, tropical regions) and lift heavy equipment (40 lbs.).
     * Excellent oral and written communication skills.
     * Team player with diverse research interests and excellent interpersonal skills.
     * Demonstrated experience to independently conduct field-based research and data collection.
     * US Citizen and ability to work on DoD installations.

Preferred Qualifications

     * Experience using GIS related software (ARC Map, ArcGIS Workstation) and generating map products.
     * Working experience in the field-description, mapping, and classification of soils.
     * Working experience in measuring soil infiltration and using soil moisture monitoring equipment.
     * Basic knowledge of soil physics or soil hydrology.
     * Demonstration of quantitative, analytical skills, and the ability to conduct research.
     * Ability to assist in the editing, compilation, and writing in support of reports and publications.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to work extended hours in the field, often in remote locations, and travel as required. The incumbent must be able to hand carry field equipment (up to 40lbs.) and collected samples across variable terrain. Collecting field data includes the use of shovels, picks, augers, and technical equipment to measure soil properties related to morphology, strength, and moisture.

Conditions of Employment

Due to security requirements associated with accessing essential project sites and information, ALL applicants MUST be citizens of the United States.

Compensation and Benefits
