We are currently seeking an experienced Business Development Scientist to identify, evaluate and develop potential new clients for commercial marine weather and consultancy services.  We are expanding our team in Raglan. MetOcean Solutions, a division of New Zealand's MetService, is a science-based consultancy and forecast supplier providing specialist numerical modelling and analytical solutions in meteorology and oceanography. With offices across New Zealand (Auckland, New Plymouth, Raglan, and Wellington) and in Sydney, Australia (MetraWeather) our international team works on projects and data analysis world-wide. We passionately believe in rigorous scientific method and in applying the latest information technology to data services. MetOcean occupies several niche marine consultancy and service roles and has a rapidly growing forecast and hindcast sector.

You will bring experience in developing strong and supportive relationships with customers, be able to analyse business opportunities by identifying prospects and contribute to the strategic development and execution of global integrated marketing.

This position would be primarily based in Raglan with some opportunity to work from other offices in the future.  Raglan is a small beach side town on the West Coast, just a short drive west of Hamilton or a two-hour drive south of Auckland. You must have a Postgraduate qualification in physical oceanography or relevant science area or equivalent experience and a tertiary qualification in business development, marketing or relevant earth sciences

To apply, you must have the following skills and experience:


  *   Postgraduate qualification in physical oceanography or relevant science area or equivalent experience
  *   A tertiary qualification in business development, marketing or relevant earth sciences
  *   Minimum of 5 years' experience in operational technical support and strategic account/partner management preferably in earth science area
  *   At least 5-years of experience in the maritime industry
  *   Constructively relates to a wide range of people with open-mindedness and good-will to develop key relationships and retain customer base through all communication channels
  *   Ability to research, analyse and document business leads to support strategic decision making
  *   Able to identify and develop new and trending markets for science and technology related services and marine weather products
  *   Ability to work autonomously and deliver to KPI's
  *   Broad range of business skills (strategic sales plans, client liaison, proposal writing, budgeting, contracts)

The following would be beneficial, but are not essential:


  *   A passion for providing excellent services leveraged off world-class science, and hunger to win new client accounts
  *   Experience in a Business Development, Consultancy or Sales environment
  *   Tenacious, resilient, motivated and highly focused on delivery of KPI's
  *   Enjoys building relationships
  *   A supportive and positive attitude
  *   Strong technical and scientific report writing skills in English, with the ability to understand and communicate complex science to a range of audiences
  *   A curious mind that will encourage exploration
  *   Enjoys being part of a team that moves quickly
  *   Effective decision-making skills
  *   A quick learner with a "can do" attitude
  *   An ability to prioritise tasks and manage projects in a timely fashion
  *   Willingness and ability to travel within New Zealand and internationally to meet customers and prospects regularly and at short notice if needed.
