Position Title

MAT Adjunct Science Faculty

Department

Education - 050

Position Summary

The American Museum of Natural History's Richard Gilder Graduate School's
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Earth Science Residency Program seeks a
full-time adjunct scientist to co-teach the course Residency 002: Science
Practicum. The adjunct scientist will participate actively in a week and
several additional days of field discovery for the full MAT cohort as part
of a faculty team. The adjunct scientist will co-develop and lead all
aspects of a laboratory research experience for a sub-cohort of 4-5 students
with a curatorial member of the MAT faculty. The topic shall involve samples
from the AMNH meteorite collection and some dimension of original
investigation, in addition to conveying a deeper understanding of solar
system evolution. The positions requires 35 hours per week through August
18th.

Candidates for this position must have a doctoral degree in geoscience or
another science field, field experience, and demonstrated teaching
experience in informal of formal context(s). The selected candidate will
join a faculty of scientists and educators charged with the implementation
of the first, NY State approved, teacher residency program in a
collections-based scientific research institution of public education.

The residency's objective is to help teacher candidates develop content
knowledge on the practice of science. MAT candidates meet this objective
through expeditions into the field, investigations in laboratory settings,
and engagement in secondary research methods. The practicum exposes students
to key concepts, scientific questions, tools, and techniques, and enables
candidates to experience and implement learning activities that align with
state and national standards. Practices include: 1) Asking Questions; 2)
Modeling; 3) Devising Testable Hypotheses; 4) Collecting, Analyzing, and
Interpreting Data; 5) Constructing and Critiquing Arguments; 6)
Communicating and Interpreting Scientific and Technical Texts; and 7)
Applying and Using Scientific Knowledge. Students come away with
understanding of both content knowledge and the practices needed to engage
in scientific inquiry.

This is a required course for NY State certification and completion of the
MAT Program.
