Job Description

Job Title: Associate Scientist III

Location:  Boulder, Colorado

Type: Full-time, Exempt

Work Authorization:
U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position.

Where You Will Work:
The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and various UCAR Cooperative Programs (UCP) - all in service of advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in atmospheric and related sciences.

What You Will Do:
Provides scientific expertise for the development and delivery of education and training content within one or more areas: NWP, satellite meteorology, mesoscale meteorology or operational meteorology.
Serves as staff scientist in the development of meteorological and earth-system-science-related training materials including creating module scripts, contributing to conceptual visualizations, and identifying and processing case study examples.
As relevant, develops and delivers training topic lectures and interactive activities for residence and virtual classroom courses.

Responsibilities:
*        Uses existing knowledge, and research as needed, to meet the training needs for assigned projects. Works with internal and external scientific and educational subject-matter experts to contribute to development of distance learning projects.  Facilitates overall script development and works with internal staff to ensure incorporation of appropriate instructional elements.  Routinely considers needs of the user community and learners, and represent these needs throughout the training development process.
*        As relevant, contributes to the development and delivery of lectures and activities for virtual and residence courses on a variety of geoscience topics, and teaches content in applicable specialization areas.
*        Fulfills scientific content development duties while being assigned to more than one project effort at a time. Serves as project lead on several projects per year, applying project management principles to ensure projects remain within scope, on or under budget, and on schedule.
*        Proactively identifies and secures scientific and technical resources to include: scientific data, visualizations of scientific data, and 3rd-party photographic and multimedia content. Specifies instructional edits and annotations of multimedia content to COMET graphic designers, following COMET production processes.
*        Works on special projects as assigned by supervisor or Program Director, possibly including travel to and course delivery at outside locations, presentations at professional meetings and support of COMET and UCAR-related activities.
*        Works under the direction of the COMET program management group with regard to policy and commitment of COMET resources
*        Works with COMET program leads and implementation manager to coordinate project budget, scope and schedule and to resolve issues that arise in these areas
*        Works with internal COMET staff, external sponsors and/or subject matter experts to identify scientific and technical needs to ensure scientific robustness of COMET training materials
*        Working knowledge of mathematics sufficient to represent the scientific and technical needs of COMET sponsors.

What You Need:
Education and Years of Experience:
*        Bachelor's degree in meteorology or atmospheric science, with five or more years' experience designing, developing, and/or teaching scientific content or on assignments leading to the ability to use meteorological and related data to develop training resources, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
*        Demonstrated experience using meteorological and environmental data for operational applications
*        Experience successfully leading and completing projects to deadline and budget
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
*        Advanced knowledge in one or more of following areas: satellite meteorology, numerical weather prediction, mesoscale meteorology, or operational forecasting
*        Knowledge of meteorological and environmental data acquisition and processing, including workstation analysis and display packages and their meteorological/hydrological application
*        Willingness to maintain currency in forecasting tools and methods and facility with latest probabilistic NWP or satellite data products
*        Ability to work effectively with external scientific and technical subject matter experts and sponsors, as well as internal staff focal points including program/sponsor-area managers
*        Developed skills in project leadership, including organizing and coordinating the tasks associated with each project assigned and managing projects to deadline and budget
*        Excellent oral and written communication skills
*        Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy and attention to detail
*        Ability to work productively in a multi-task work environment
*        Ability and willingness to make technical presentations to professional audiences
*        Ability to travel
Desired but not required:
*        Master's degree
*        Familiarity with training approaches for adult learners
*        Advanced knowledge of other topical areas of meteorology, hydrology or earth systems science
