Postdoctoral Research Associate

Environmental Resilience Institute Water Futures Initiative: Coastal Water Futures

The University of Virginia’s pan-University Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI) seeks to hire a postdoctoral research associate for a new project in Coastal Water Futures with Emily Bernhardt (Duke University) and Xi Yang (University of Virginia).

The ERI is launching a Water Futures Initiative (WFI) to explore and develop new knowledge and solutions to a set of our most pressing challenges in the availability, quality and allocation of water in local to global communities. This position is one of three offered by the WFI in each of three focus areas: Water Security, Justice and Politics; Urban Water; and Coastal Land Margins. The initiative is based on interdisciplinary, multi-institution collaborative teams which are led by a pair of Faculty Fellows: for the following projects: 1) Water Security, Justice, and Politics (this position), 2) Resilient Urban Water Systems, and 3) Coastal Water Futures. A full description of each of the working groups can be found on ERI’s website at https://eri.virginia.edu/wfi/.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A PhD on a water-related topic in a discipline relevant to the desired working group is required. Ability to work as part of a team is required, and previous experience with interdisciplinary teams is preferred. Strong verbal and written communication of scientific results, strong emotional intelligence, and ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks are required skills. Each research associate will be mentored by both leads, and will interact with the full team.

The Coastal Margins group seeks a research associate with strong technical skills in remote sensing. We expect the successful applicant to lead our efforts to map coastal vegetation change in response to sea level rise and saltwater intrusion (SLR-SWI). The postdoc will be based at UVA but will have additional office space in the Bernhardt lab at Duke University to facilitate interactions with both project leads.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/UVAJobs/job/Charlottesville-VA/Research-Associate-in-Environmental-Sciences_R0006961 and attach a cover letter including an indication of what working group you are interested in, CV, a statement of research interests within the broad area of environmental resilience and sustainability, and a list of three references including contact information.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on June 15, but the position will remain open until filled.

This is initially a one-year appointment; renewable for an additional two, six-month increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
