We are seeking a highly-motivated PhD student to join UCLA’s Institute of
the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) to study the spatial and/or
temporal connectedness of hydroclimate extremes. Funding for this PhD
position comes from a joint award to UCLA and the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) from the National Science Foundation (NSF)
program Prediction of and Resilience against Extreme Events (PREEVENTS).
This unique opportunity to pursue a fully-funded PhD in a diverse, highly
interdisciplinary setting at UCLA will be open to applicants during the
autumn 2019 University of California application cycle.

The successful applicant will enroll in the IoES doctoral program and
pursue research focused broadly on hydroclimate extremes. The overarching
goal of the funded NSF project is to mitigate adverse societal impacts of
floods and droughts in the United States

through understanding 1) the physical mechanisms through which extreme
meteorological events are connected in a spatial and or/temporal sense, and
2) how these connections, as well as possible Earth system precursors,
might yield enhanced predictability of disruptive events and/or more
accurate forecasts—particularly in a warming climate. The PhD student will
be strongly encouraged to apply their research to societally-relevant
questions and/or engage in science communication activities.

The successful applicant will be co-advised by two IoES faculty members,
and will also receive extensive mentorship from scientists at NCAR. There
will be fully-funded opportunities to travel to Boulder, Colorado each year
to facilitate collaboration with NCAR scientists, as well as to travel to
scientific conferences.

To be considered, you must apply by December 15, 2019. Please be sure to
mention NSF PREEVENTS in your application. Applicants are encouraged to
contact Daniel Swain (dlswain at ucla.edu) with specific questions about the
NSF-funded PhD position. For more general questions regarding IoES and/or
the PhD program application process, please visit:

Administrator Harrison Levy (hlevy at ioes.ucla.edu).
