Post Doctorate RA - Understanding the lifecycle of deep convection

Job Description
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to work on a project broadly aimed at developing a better understanding of deep convective initiation, organization, dynamics, and microphysics for the purpose of improving its representation in multi-scale models. The particular scientific foci are flexible within the topic of deep convective cloud life cycle, but the postdoc will be expected to analyze recent field campaign measurements centered around Ka-, X-, and C-band polarimetric radar data and GOES-16 satellite retrievals in collaboration with several scientists at PNNL. Possible research could include (i) two-way interactions between microphysical processes and convective circulations such as updrafts, downdrafts, and cold pools, (ii) impacts of various environmental variables on convective cloud and mesoscale system macrophysical, microphysical, and dynamical evolution, (iii) sensitivity of simulated convective cloud life cycle to model resolution and microphysics parameterization, and (iv) investigation of potential model bias causes. Additionally, the postdoc may contribute to analyzing the ability of models to reproduce observed impacts of convective clouds and precipitation on surface properties, aerosol redistribution, and boundary layer evolution with feedbacks to subsequent convective cloud development. Research will include a combination of focused case studies and statistical examination of a population of well-observed cases.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
Required:

  *   Familiarity with a variety of observational datasets from various platforms (e.g., radar, satellite, sounding),
  *   Strong understanding of cloud and convective processes and their relationship with large-scale environments
  *   Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  *   Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams as well as ability to independently pursue original ideas and new directions
  *   Interest in contributing to an active intellectual environment
  *   Ability to think critically and develop and test hypotheses using a combination of measurements and models.
  *   Demonstrated record of publications in peer reviewed journals
Preferred:

  *   Experience running and possibly modifying code in cloud-system resolving or large-eddy simulation models (e.g., WRF, Fortran programming)
  *   Experience analyzing cloud/precipitation measurements, notably from radars (e.g., understanding radar measurements and using radar software packages)
  *   Expertise in convective meteorology (e.g., impact of various environmental conditions on deep convective properties)
  *   Familiarity with high performance computing, large datasets, and statistical analysis
  *   Experience with computer languages usually used in atmospheric science (e.g., Fortran, Python, Matlab, IDL, NCL, R)
  *   Familiarity with Linux/Unix computational environments
