Description


General Description

The Railroad Commission of Texas, recognized as a worldwide leader in the regulation of oil and gas exploration and production, seeks a Geoscientist to provide advanced geological work in the Groundwater Advisory Unit<https://www.rrc.state.tx.us/oil-gas/applications-and-permits/groundwater-advisory-unit/>(GAU) of the Oil and Gas Division. Major responsibilities include evaluating and determining the depth of usable-quality groundwater and the base of the underground source of drinking water to be protected during oil and gas operations. The Geoscientist provides the related information to the oil and gas industry, other state agencies, and the general public. The Geoscientist will utilize geophysical well logs, geographic information systems, custom software applications, and available literature in determining groundwater protection recommendations. This position offers the opportunity to study and use the latest technology to gather data used in the creation of a statewide subsurface 3-D image / map that identifies the location and depth of water resources.



Essential Job Duties

* Performs highly complex (senior-level) geosciences work.

* Coordinates inspections, testing and evaluates data for compliance with laws and specifications.
* Coordinates the execution of technical projects and design preparation, plans, estimates, and calculations.
* Analyzes, interprets and reviews geological, geochemical, geohydrological, and geophysical information from sources such as survey data, well logs, bore holes, and aerial photos.
* Plans and conducts geological, geochemical, geohydrological, and geophysical field studies and surveys; gathers samples; and/or conducts drilling and test programs used to collect data for research or application.
* Develops and conducts geoscientific studies to provide information for use in regional development, resource management, environmental investigations, land use, site selection, and development of other projects.
* Researches laws, regulations, and policies; and delivers responses to the public and governmental agencies.
* Reviews the activities of contractors, operators, and civic authorities.
* Reviews, analyzes and evaluates geology reports, test reports, studies, findings and technical data; and develops recommendations for programs or projects. You may also be called upon to review and/or evaluate others' geology reports, test reports, studies, and data; and/or assist them with the development of recommendations for their programs or projects.
* Prepares and reviews records and analytical reports and provides recommendations for courses of action.
* Maintains and prepares records and reports.

* May supervise the work of others.

* Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
* Perform additional related essential tasks to maintain production workflow.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

* Experience in geosciences work.
* Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in geology, geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry, soil science, or a related field.

* A minimum of five years related work experience.
* Must be a Licensed Professional Geoscientist (PG) in Texas or a state with reciprocity.



Preferred Qualifications

* Master's Degree in Geosciences.
* Experience working in groundwater hydrogeology.
* Experience working in upstream oil and gas exploration, development, or operations.
* Experience with ArcGIS and/or Petra software.
* Familiarity with database administration and design.
* Experience with scripting languages, preferably Python.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Knowledge of geoscience principles, techniques, and procedures.

* Skilled in the interpretation of energy industry well logs, of testing methods, processes, and procedures.

* Skill in mathematics and statistics; and of the practical application of geosciences and technology.

* Skill in scientific data management.

* Advanced skill in collecting, assessing and evaluating geological, geohydrological, and geophysical data.

* Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software.

* Skill in the use of standard tools of the profession.

* Ability to plan and coordinate projects, to apply geological concepts.

* Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
