Natural gas migration and release

The Department Civil Engineering at the University of Texas Arlington (UTA) in collaboration with the Energy Institute at Colorado State University (CSU) is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral research position to work on a project funded by the Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). The overarching goal of the project is to accurately locate and measure methane emissions associated with natural gas production and distribution. The postdoctoral researcher will focus on work to improve understanding of gas migration in the subsurface and emission from the ground due to leaking underground natural gas pipelines. The researcher will be engaged in field and laboratory research on methane migration through soil, as well as its interaction with the atmosphere and detection. Postdoctoral applicants should have a Ph.D. in Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field and have prior experience on gas migration or a related topic. Preferred candidates will have modeling experience on a relevant topic (e.g., subsurface gas transport or plume dispersion modeling). The successful applicants will be joining a dynamic group headed by Dr. Kate Smits from UTA (https://www.uta.edu/faculty/smitsk) and Dan Zimmerle from CSU. (http://energy.colostate.edu/metec/). Interested applicants should send a CV and short statement of interest to Kate Smits at kathleen.smits at uta.edu<mailto:kathleen.smits at uta.edu>. Preference will be given to applications received by August 1, 2019. The position can start as early as August 2019.
