Natural Infrastructure Team Overview

WRI’s Natural Infrastructure team is an interdisciplinary and cross-programmatic team that works to scale up investment in restoration, protection, and sustainable management of natural and working landscapes, alongside built systems, to provide carbon sequestration, water-related services, disaster risk mitigation, and poverty alleviation. The team leads WRI’s Cities4Forests<https://www.wri.org/our-work/project/cities4forests> Initiative, which aims to catalyze political, social, and economic support among city governments and urban citizens to integrate inner, nearby, and faraway forests into city development plans and programs. The team also leads work housed in WRI’s Water and Climate programs where there is a nexus with land use and management—including water risk response strategies in Africa, the Forest Resilience Bond, and land sector carbon management in the United States.

Job Summary

The Natural Infrastructure team seeks a full-time, benefits eligible Research Analyst II. This is a limited term position running through December 2019, with possibility of conversion to a permanent position contingent on performance and available funding. In this position, you will support, coordinate, and contribute to high-quality research products, stakeholder outreach, and development efforts across a range of topics, teams, and geographies, supporting overall objectives of advancing transformative landscape-scale solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustaining forests and other natural resources for future generations, and ensuring a water-secure future. We expect that your portfolio in the first year will have a strong focus on water risk response strategies in Ethiopia, as well as land sector carbon management in the United States.

We are seeking a candidate with strong qualitative skills. Success in this position will also require your versatility, an entrepreneurial spirit, an ability to cultivate and manage relationships with external partners, and an ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines while setting and delivering on clear priorities. In this position, you will work closely with the Global Water Program, WRI-Africa, WRI-US, Global Forest Watch, and the Global Restoration Initiative, and will be part of a growing team of researchers within the Food, Forests and Water Program.

Job Responsibilities

Research & Knowledge Development (70%)

  *   Assist researchers and project managers with literature reviews, expert consultations, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and opportunity assessments
  *   Co-author knowledge products (e.g. reports, briefs, data products)
  *   Contribute to research proposals, including for fundraising prospects
  *   Develop presentation materials and presenting at internal/external meetings
  *   Co-author blog posts, case studies and other outreach and communications materials
  *   Review 1-2 knowledge products written by other WRI researchers yearly

Program Management and Administration (30%)

  *   Organize internal and external meetings, workshops, conferences and other dissemination activities
  *   Liaise with external partners and WRI colleagues across programs and countries
  *   Liaise with internal staff and stakeholders to problem solve and generate solutions to project implementation issues
  *   Support the monitoring and tracking of project deliverables to ensure that they are submitted within the period of performance and at high quality
  *   Support donor stewardship and communications.
  *   Additional ad-hoc program management and operational duties as needed

Job Qualifications

  *   Two+ years of relevant, full-time work experience in analyzing and writing research products
  *   Bachelor's degree in environmental science/management, public policy, or similar; master's degree preferred
  *   Excellent qualitative research and writing skills
  *   Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet research
  *   Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse teams of individuals and colleagues
  *   Strong written and oral communication skills, particularly when it comes to communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  *   Ability to cultivate and manage relationships with external partners
  *   Ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines while setting and delivering on clear priorities
  *   Enjoys working within a large, diverse, and collaborative team environment
  *   Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrated strong work ethic
  *   Comfort working with remote managers
  *   Flexibility to travel
