Postdoctoral Appointee-Regional Climate Modeling of Land-Atmospheric Interaction
Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, IL
Position Description
The Environmental Science Division (EVS) at Argonne provides intellectual and technical leadership in environmental and Earth system sciences. We tackle the most important scientific problems of our nation on the nexus of water, energy and environment.
We seek a Postdoctoral research associate who will investigate the effect of soil moisture and land surface properties on boundary layer moisture processes and the hydrological feedback, using both ground-based observations and regional climate model simulations.
In this role you will:
* Conduct innovative research on the processes that control moisture and energy flux exchanges at the land-atmosphere interface.
* Assimilate soil moisture and surface fluxes data into a regional climate model (i.e. WRF) and simulate the hydrological responses.
* Collaborate on additional research projects within the climate and atmospheric science research group.
* Collaborate with the Math and Computational Science (MCS) division on high-performance computing and advanced data discovery.
* Disseminate research results to the community by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
Position Requirements
We expect you to have:
* A recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science or related fields.
* Experience with regional climate modeling, especially using WRF-ARW and/or coupled with land surface model.
* Experience with data mining and fusion of large datasets from various observational platforms.
* Knowledge of boundary layer thermodynamics, land surface processes and modeling, and data assimilation.
* Experience with high-performance computing systems.
* Experience in the Linux/Unix programming environment and proficiency in visualization.
* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and capability of working effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
Argonne is a multi-disciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists, engineers, and business professionals work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment. Ever since we were born out of the University of Chicago's work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, our goal has been to make an impact - from the atomic to the human to the global scale.
As an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer, Argonne National Laboratory is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace that fosters collaborative scientific discovery and innovation. In support of this commitment, Argonne encourages minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities to apply for employment. Argonne considers all qualified applicants for employment without regard to age, ancestry, citizenship status, color, disability, gender, gender identity, genetic information, marital status, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other characteristic protected by law.
