Job Title: Technologist, Atmospherics Physics and Weather
Location: Pasadena, CA
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology invites applications for a Technologist in the Atmospheric Physics and Weather group in the Earth Science Section at JPL. In this position, you will be responsible for carrying out testing, verification and validation analysis of data from atmospheric sounders, such as the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the Cross-track Infrared and Microwave Sounding System (CrIMSS), produced with a variety of retrieval systems, for the purpose of evaluating and characterizing the data products as well as the retrieval systems. You will participate in the development of methodologies to assess the “climate quality” of these data sets. You will work closely with an existing team and report analysis results at team meetings.
This position requires the following qualifications:
• Bachelor degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, Astronomy or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 3 years of related experience; a Master’s degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 1 year of related experience; or Ph.D. in similar disciplines with some related experience
• Fluency w IDL, Matlab, Python or similar analysis tools
• Experience in determining accuracy, precision and information content of satellite data products
• Thorough understanding of common statistical assessment methods and metrics
• Familiarity with atmospheric sounders and their data products
• Familiarity with reference data from sources such as radiosondes, buoys and reanalysis
• Familiarity with matchup methods to collocate reference and satellite data
• Familiarity with soundr retrieval methodology, algorithms and software
The following qualifications are preferred:
• Specific experience with infrared sounders, such as AIRS
• Specific experience with microwave sounders, such as AMSU
• Knowledge of radiative transfer models
• Familiarity with the use of data quality flags and QC indicators
• Familiarity with netCDF and HDF5 data formats
• Understanding of atmospheric phenomena studied with sounders
• Demonstrated experience in related research as reflected in a publication record
• Proficiency in ad-hoc analysis programming
• Proficiency in generating illustrative plots and images
• Ability to create novel ways of analyzing and characterizing the quality of sounder data
• Excellent written and oral communications skills suitable for peer-reviewed publications and high-quality presentations
