Geologist II 

 

This position is open to Alaska Residents only

 

 

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is seeking a
journey professional-level geologist to assist in gathering, compiling, and
evaluating sand and gravel resource information for Alaska's North Slope.
The successful applicant will use knowledge of earth surface processes,
geotechnical data, and material properties, as well as Geographic
Information Systems (GIS), to make meaningful contributions to the
Division's Arctic Strategic Transportation and Resource Project (ASTAR). The
successful applicant will work under the direct supervision of DGGS's ASTAR
project manager in Fairbanks, Alaska.

 

This is a long-term nonpermanent position lasting a eight months, with the
possibility of extension pending availability of additional funding.

 
Specific responsibilities of incumbents will include, but are not limited
to:

.        Work with interns, contractors, and DGGS staff to gather and
compile existing surface and subsurface geological and geotechnical data;

.        Create and manage a database of sand and gravel resource
information from available drillhole data;

.        Assist in evaluating the quality and completeness of sand and
gravel resource information in a shothole geodatabase created from field
data and geologic samples archived at the Division's Geologic Materials
Center;

.        Assist in evaluating the quality and completeness of
contractor-developed terrain unit mapping;

.        Assist in analysis of terrain unit data and compiled geological and
geotechnical data as part of the sand and gravel resource assessment;

.        Assist with field season planning and participate in field data
collection to determine the character and distribution of construction
materials resources; and

.        Assist the program manager in creating maps and figures, and
preparing reports and data products for dissemination. Project work involves
using a variety of desktop graphics programs and geospatial software
including ArcGIS.

We are seeking a motivated early- to mid-level geoscientist with a
background in geology, physical geography, geological engineering, or
closely related fields. Experience in GIS, engineering geology, remote
sensing, geologic mapping, and subsurface data evaluation is preferred, but
not required. Experience conducting fieldwork in remote Alaska settings is
also desirable, but not required for this position. If you meet the required

understanding of surficial-geologic materials and processes;

.        Experience collecting or analyzing subsurface geologic data (i.e.,
drill log data or similar), including any computer programs you may have
used;

.        Experience creating, manipulating, and analyzing geospatial data
using ArcGIS;

.        Experience using ArcGIS or ArcGIS Pro to make professional-quality
maps or figures;

.        Experience compiling, managing, and analyzing large volumes of
data, with a focus on geotechnical data; and

.        Field experience related to geology, geomorphology, remote sensing,
engineering geology, or geologic mapping, including any experience in remote
Alaska.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics,
geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their
subdivisions, including mining engineering.
AND
One year of entry professional level experience in geology, geophysics,
geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their
subdivisions, including mining engineering. This experience is met by
service as a Geologist I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with
another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in any science major, which
includes the completion of 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in the above
geoscience fields and 24 additional semester hours (36 quarter hours) of
course work in natural sciences, may substitute for the education
requirement.

Equivalent combinations of professional experience and graduate level
education in the geoscience fields described above are acceptable and will
be considered as follows: 24 graduate semester hours=one full year of
graduate education=one full year of professional experience.
