Job Type/Schedule

This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week.
Department Name/Job Location

This position is in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The position is located at Rudolph Hall. This position is for the Danforth Campus in the School of Arts and Sciences.
Essential Functions

The successful applicant will play a key role in the advancement of the state of gas processing and high-precision noble gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry, particularly in the analysis of krypton isotopes in mantle-derived samples. Analyses of modern and Archean samples are targeted in a three-year project. The individual will develop and calibrate new krypton separation and analysis methods in the new Noble Gas Laboratory at Washington University, and obtain high precision data for helium, neon, argon and xenon isotopes in the same samples. The individual will be part of a collaborative project with Prof. David Fike, Prof. Rita Parai and a graduate student focused on understanding mantle-surface chemical interactions in deep time. Other expectations include participation in laboratory group scientific discussions, in daily operations in the mass spectrometry lab, and production of scientific publications and presentations resulting from this project.
Required Qualifications

  * A Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences or a related field is required at the time of appointment.
  * Experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometry is required.
Preferred Qualifications

  * Individuals with skills and experience relevant to the project are especially encouraged to apply.
  * Relevant techniques for this project include noble gas mass spectrometry, ultra-high vacuum gas processing, programming with Labview, and programming with Matlab.
  * Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills and technical expertise with standard ultra-high vacuum functions (pump types, gauges, bakeout procedures) are preferred.
Salary Range

Starting annual salary is $51,000.
Pre-Employment Screening

All external candidates receiving an offer for employment will be required to submit to pre-employment screening for this position. Current employees applying for a new position within the university may be subject to this requirement.
