POSITION OVERVIEW

The Corning School of Ocean Studies at Maine Maritime Academy seeks an interdisciplinary and collaborative visiting Sawyer Post-doctoral Fellow or Assistant Professor to assist the Ocean Studies department with the establishment of a new baccalaureate degree program in Coastal and Marine Environmental Science (CMES). It is anticipated that the visiting Sawyer position will be a one-year position, with the potential to be renewed one year at a time for up to three years.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence, an enthusiasm for team teaching, and the potential to develop new upper division courses in their area of expertise. This full-time, stipend-based visiting position carries a maximum of 24 units teaching load per academic year.


TEACHING

The visiting Sawyer position will work with Ocean Studies faculty to develop, incorporate, and co-teach coastal and marine environmental content into the first-year introductory course Introduction to Marine and Environmental Science, as well as develop upper level courses Global Change and Land-Margin Ecosystems. Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom or laboratory; preparing contemporary teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; and evaluating presentations.


ADVISING

Student advising includes time spent meeting with students regarding academic, curricular and career matters.


DUTIES

 Develop and teach at the undergraduate level lecture and laboratory courses in the Ocean Studies department. This will include the courses of Introduction to Marine and Environmental Science, Land-Margin Ecosystems, and Global Change, and/or other courses assigned by the Department Chair.

 Co-develop learning materials, prepare assessments, and maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance.

 Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, papers, and exams.

 Participate in departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department.

 To participate in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments of students within and without your department.

 To provide advice and support to students.

 Hold office hours. Contribute to departmental working groups or committees as requested.

 Maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations.

 Knowledge of FERPA.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 Candidates must have a Ph.D. in any area of Coastal or Marine Environmental Science by the start of the appointment.

 Preference will be given to candidates whose area of expertise is in any of these fields: marine geosciences, climate change, or coastal marine science.

 Proficiency in R is highly desirable.

 Demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service.

 Membership in relevant professional organization(s).
