Description: The Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences (DPES) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Global Environmental Change, with a particular focus on biogeochemical processes. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2019.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in an appropriate environmental or earth science field or a related area by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, and must possess a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths: see https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/physsci/node/258. In particular, we seek a candidate with a disciplinary focus on ecosystem responses to global change in managed and natural terrestrial ecosystems. The ideal candidate will have strengths in: biogeochemistry, nutrient/element transfer within ecosystems and/or land-use change, with emphasis on impacts of environmental change on both natural and managed landscapes. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Evidence of excellence in teaching is provided through a listing of teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier, which should include: a coherent statement of teaching philosophy; sample course syllabi either of courses delivered by the candidate, or planned for the future; and any teaching evaluations available.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The appointment is in the Department of Physical and Environmental Science with full membership in the tri-campus Graduate Department of Physical and Environmental Science. The Environmental Science group in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences has particular strengths in the areas of biogeochemistry and environmental geosciences, with an overarching theme of multi-scale (molecular to ecosystem) responses to human-induced changes in terrestrial and aquatic systems. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Environmental Science program in DPES and will have opportunities to build new graduate courses in the Graduate Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences.
