Lecturer in Earth System Science/Geographic Information Systems
The University of Alabama in Huntsville, classified as a High Research Active institution, offers academic and research programs in the Colleges of Science, Business, Engineering, Education, Nursing, Professional and Continuing Studies, and Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Huntsville maintains one of the highest per capita incomes and standards of living in the Southeast U.S. It is a national center of aerospace and high technology research and is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
The Department of Atmospheric Science has been ranked in the top ten by the Chronicle of Higher Education based on faculty research productivity index. It is co-located with UAH’s Earth System Science Center, NASA MSFC Earth Science Branch, and the National Weather Service (NWS), all of which are located in the National Space Science Technology Center (NSSTC), enabling students to get a unique collaborative research and education experience. A cross-cutting theme of the Department is the development and application of geospatial analytical methods and remote sensing technology to Earth Science disciplines. These include land use/land cover change, severe weather, climate, human adaptation, lightning instrumentation, numerical modeling and data assimilation, satellite remote sensing, air pollution, urban studies, natural disasters, and environmental policy and decision-making.
Within the NSSTC facility, multiple NASA Applied Earth Science Programs (such as NASA SERVIR, DEVELOP, SPoRT, IMPACT) have active research programs and employ dozens of University scientists. The GIS & Remote Sensing teaching lab is equipped with 30 workstations used primarily for teaching GIS, scientific programming, and satellite data processing. Additional resources available for faculty include: instrumentation and mobile radars/lidars housed in the adjoining Severe Weather Institute – Radar & Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL), multiple computing labs, equipped student research spaces, and mobile computing resources.
The Department has fifteen full-time faculty, over 20 adjunct/affiliate faculty, 60 graduate students, and more than 100 undergraduates.
The Department of Atmospheric Science at The University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for a non-tenure track faculty position with the rank of Lecturer beginning August 2019. Applicants must have an M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in Earth system science, geography, environmental science, geoscience, or closely related field. Technical knowledge of geographic information systems and experience in satellite and/or airborne remote sensing is required. Excellent communication skills and teaching/advising experience are essential. The successful candidate will be expected to teach 3-4 GIS and Earth system science courses per academic semester during the Fall and Spring, serve as one of the undergraduate academic advisors for the program, and help to develop and manage a GIS Certificate program within the department. During the summer months, when the lecturer is not engaged in the teaching and advising activities of the academic year, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with UAH, NASA, and NWS scientists to participate in funded research programs in the NSSTC.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin October 15, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled. Complete applications will be reviewed and interviews scheduled on a rolling basis.
