CIRES Physical Sciences Division FACETS Post-Doctoral Researcher

Forecasting a Continuum of Environmental Threats (FACETs) is a proposed next-generation hazardous weather paradigm that utilizes probabilistic information as its foundation. FACETs will leverage physical and social science research to support a system that is modern, flexible, and designed to communicate clear and simple hazardous weather, water, and climate information to serve society. In alignment with the Weather Forecasting and Innovation Act, the FACETS architecture is designed to show the advantage of using probabilistic environmental threats analysis and assessments to provide more comprehensive and rigorous scientific information in support of decisions in anticipation of discrete events (including flood control and drought risk management), to preparedness and risk mitigation across subseasonal to seasonal timescales, which influences water resources availability, wildfire risks etc.. FACETs supports NOAA's Weather-Ready Nation initiative to build community resilience in the face of increasing vulnerability to extreme weather, water, and climate events.

The Physical Sciences Division (PSD) at the NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory and the University of Colorado's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science (CIRES) is offering a two-year postdoctoral position at CIRES for a highly motivated individual to apply the FACETS framework to understand, describe and characterize the uncertainties and identify key contributors to variability in predicted risk estimates across the too wet to too dry continuum on subseasonal to seasonal timescales.

Who We Are

At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people's relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth's poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

The NOAA/ESRL's (Earth System Research Laboratory) Physical Sciences Division (PSD) conducts weather and climate research to observe and understand Earth's physical environment, and to improve weather and climate predictions on global-to-local scales.

PSD's mission is to support NOAA and the nation through physical sciences research that advances understanding and predictions of weather, water, and climate, and translates the research findings into actionable information and services.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will work with NOAA and CIRES scientists at (PSD) to use a network of observational sites to quantify the probabilistic description of western soil moisture and precipitation, including a stochastic description of climatological and meteorological forcing and response, which influence both floods and droughts on the relevant timescales.
