The Urban Studies Institute<https://urbaninstitute.gsu.edu/> at Georgia State University conducts top-level urban research, offers an innovative and specialized interdisciplinary curriculum, and engages with stakeholders in metropolitan Atlanta and in other cities around the world. The Institute's research agenda ranges from local to global, from urban theory to policy research. Research themes emphasize urban economic resilience, inclusive development, and urban sustainability. The Institute was founded in 2017. It is housed in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and its research and teaching engagements reach across the University. It is presently composed of five tenured or tenure track faculty, two postdoctoral researchers, and 25 affiliate faculty from a range of schools and disciplines.



The Institute is seeking an assistant professor, to begin in August of 2019.



Position: Assistant professor with expertise in sustainable urban systems



We seek an exceptional early-career scholar committed to transdisciplinary research on the systematic ecological sustainability of urbanization and urban governance, with particular emphasis on the theme of environmental urbanism. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in sustainability sciences and resilience; have an affinity with comparative urban studies, and have a research agenda with strong external funding potential. This position aligns with the Institute's mission to connect interdisciplinary perspectives, develop an innovative and specialized interdisciplinary curriculum, and engage stakeholders in metropolitan Atlanta, nationally, and abroad.



Required:

*Completed PhD (before August 1, 2019) in urban studies, geography, sustainability science, urban ecology, urban planning, or other related social sciences;

*Experience with urban social-ecological systems and bringing scientific expertise to the study and pursuit of sustainable urban systems;

*Experience working in collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects; and

*A broad interest in urban studies and motivation to help build a new Institute with missions in research, teaching, and outreach.



Preferred:

*Experience working with participatory and transdisciplinary approaches to transformations solutions;

*Expertise in specific areas such as climate and environmental justice, climate change adaptation, ecosystem services, equity, futures research, knowledge systems, transitions / transformations, etc.; and

*Innovative teaching approaches, including engaging students in solutions-oriented projects.
