Job Description and Duties
The Health and Ecosystems Assessment Section has an opening for a motivated staff person with expertise in toxicology or public health. The California Air Resources Board is internationally recognized as one of the leading air pollution control agencies. It is a world leader in promoting public health by providing healthful air for all Californians. The Section provides scientific and technical support for the Board's efforts to achieve statewide attainment of air quality standards.
The selected candidate will develop and manage research contracts with outside investigators, conduct in-house research, and prepare reports and analyze data on exposure to air pollutants. CARB funds extramural research with universities on health effects related to exposure to air pollution. The candidate will identify research needs, develop relationships with investigators and manage research contracts. CARB also has air quality data sets from stationary monitors, mobile monitors, special monitoring studies, and satellites. The candidate will analyze the data to evaluate the effectiveness of CARB's efforts to improve air quality. The section also receives inquiries on the toxicity of air pollutants from the public as well as the Board. The candidate will write clear summaries of pollutant toxicity. The candidate will make presentations to the Board and community-based organizations, and respond to questions from the public. The candidate should be comfortable making presentations and communicating CARB's objectives to nontechnical audiences.

The most competitive candidates will have experience and strong educational background in toxicology or public health and air quality. Experience in risk assessment and an interest in environmental justice is also preferred, but not required. Desirable qualifications include: strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work as part of a team and independently; strong organizational skills; aptitude to develop and present written and verbal reports to stakeholders; and the ability to work effectively with community-based organizations, industry, and government agencies. The selected candidate must be a team player with a positive attitude, dedication, and a desire to make original and sustained contributions to CARB.
