The School of the Earth, Ocean, and Environment invites applications for a
tenure-track, assistant professor position to begin August 16, 2019. We
seek an individual with outstanding research and teaching capabilities and
interests that focus on the intersection of water and society. Applicants
should possess a Ph.D. in the social sciences (economics, environmental
science, environmental studies, geography, public policy, political
science, regional and urban planning, science and technology studies,
sociology, or related fields). The specific area of expertise is open, but
applicants’ research must lie at the intersection of social and water
issues, freshwater or marine, and should demonstrate specialization in
areas including, but not limited to, water policy, politics, resources, or
planning.

We seek candidates whose scholarship is methodologically rigorous, grounded
in theory, and who can work across disciplinary boundaries to produce
innovative research and teaching. Preferred candidates will have
interdisciplinary training that spans both the biophysical and societal
dimensions of water, a demonstrated interest in conducting
interdisciplinary research, a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring,
and an interest in research that can be applied in non-academic settings.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a leading research
program capable of attracting external funding and is expected to teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of the Earth, Ocean and
Environment. The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment (

is a multidisciplinary unit of approximately 600 undergraduate students,
more than 80 graduate students, and 32 faculty representing research areas
ranging from Earth and Ocean Sciences to Environmental Policy and History.
Potential collaborative interactions exist within the School and with other
units across the University. Teaching responsibilities will include
introductory courses that support interdisciplinary degrees in
Environmental Studies and Environmental Science as well as upper-level
undergraduate and graduate level courses related to the candidate’s
specialty, with a standard teaching load of two courses per semester. Cross
appointment with an appropriate unit at the University of South Carolina is
possible, depending on the candidate’s expertise.

All applicants must fill out an online application at USC Jobs:
https://uscjobs.sc.edu/postings/40377. Applicants should submit a cover
letter, curriculum vita, research statement, statement of teaching
interests, contact information, including telephone number and email
address, for three references. For more information please contact: Scott
