Assistant Professor – Native American Environment, Health and Community – Cluster Hire

This position will be one of an interdisciplinary cluster hire focused on Native American Environment, Health and Community. Collaborating units include the School of Nursing, and the School of Human Ecology. Successful candidates will conduct interdisciplinary research, teach courses, mentor students, and contribute to academic service and an academic environment of inclusive excellence.

Degree and area of specialization:
Earned research doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in an environmental field or in a discipline in which the research and the course of study had a strong environmental focus.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
* Demonstrated experience, or combined education and experience, in conducting research related to environmental issues relevant to the purposes of this cluster;
* A record of research publication;
* One or more years of experience, or combined education and experience, in teaching at undergraduate or graduate levels in the environment or a related field.
Principal duties:
The faculty member in this position, as part of a larger Native American Environment, Health, and Community Cluster, will conduct research and participate in teaching that addresses environmental components essential to a healthful and culturally rich environment. We seek applications from those with expertise in any environmental health area, including, but not limited to: environmental epidemiology; assessment of food systems as they relate to community health and social support; environmental effects of policies unique to Native jurisdictions; study of the nature, distribution, management, restoration, and health related benefits of natural ecosystems having cultural significance to Native peoples. A large range of disciplinary backgrounds will be considered, including, but not limited to: population health, public health, demography, toxicology, geography, anthropology, ecology, and soil, air, and water sciences. Teaching and research should relate synergistically to the health and community focused programs of the other two participants in the cluster and to other faculty working on issues related to Native nations. The successful candidate hired into this position will have a tenure line in the Nelson Institute, a cross-campus academic division dedicated to interdisciplinary research and teaching. Split appointments between departments are common in the Institute, and would be considered, as appropriate, for the person hired into this position. A person in this position will probably wish to be an affiliate of the university-wide American Indian Studies Program https://amindian.wisc.edu/

Graduate and undergraduate level teaching experience using active learning, co-teaching, and interprofessional education strategies is highly desirable.

Tenure-track faculty in the Nelson Institute conduct research; develop and maintain extramural funding for their research; collaborate across and within multiple disciplines; actively disseminate the products of their research through publication and conference presentation; teach and co-teach graduate and undergraduate courses on topics relevant to their expertise; mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; and contribute to school, university, community, and professional committees and other activities through academic service. Tenure-track faculty members positively contribute to Nelson Institute and University of Wisconsin-Madison goals for diversity and inclusive excellence.

The Nelson Institute is a cross-campus interdisciplinary institute that addresses all aspects of the environment. It houses three research centers, has eighteen funded faculty, and over 150 faculty affiliates. It houses a large undergraduate major in Environmental Studies, and three graduate programs, Environment and Resources (MS and PhD), Water Resources Management (MS), and a professional MS degree in Environmental Conservation with two options, Environmental Conservation, and Environmental Observation and Informatics. The Institute builds partnerships to synergize and sustain excellence in the interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service that make the University of Wisconsin-Madison a world leader in addressing environmental challenges.
