The Arecibo Observatory (AO) in Puerto Rico, famous for its outstanding research in radio astronomy, solar-system studies, and space and atmospheric sciences, is home to the world's largest radio/radar telescope.
AO invites applications for multiple observatory scientist positions in observational radio astronomy. The selected applicants will be expected to participate in enabling Arecibo's user community to obtain the best possible scientific results from the telescope, and pursue their own cutting-edge research programs. Development of novel observational techniques as well as the commissioning of new observing equipment are of importance. Overall, these positions are expected to be 75% service and 25% independent research. The selected candidates will be encouraged to apply for grant funding.
Appointment levels will be commensurate with experience. Innovative job pairing/sharing will be considered.
Job Duties:
* Lead science observations and shape short term and long term strategic plans for the site in radio astronomy.
* Support and develop radio astronomy observations, including interacting with both users and other observatory staff, in particular the telescope scheduler, and the electronics and IT departments.
* Contribute to general observatory service and support tasks, as well as carry out independent research programs aligned with the interests of the observatory.
* Interact with scientists and students at UCF main campus, UMET, and UPR.
* May involve mentoring observatory postdoctoral staff.
* Mentoring of undergraduate summer students.
* Appointees at the senior level will contribute to strategic planning at the observatory, particularly with reference to their area of expertise.
Position Minimum Qualifications
For observatory scientist: Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in physics or engineering including astronomy, space physics, planetary science, or a related subject, or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of academic research achievement, or professional qualifications in the field of specialization above those which would be equivalent to the highest degree and at least 5 years appropriate experience.
For observatory senior scientist: Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in physics or engineering including astronomy, space physics, planetary science, or a related subject, or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization and a record of academic research achievement, or professional qualifications in the field of specialization above those which would be equivalent to the highest degree and at least 7 years appropriate experience. A demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, a record of scientific publications in planetary science, and experience in applying for external funding.
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Preferences
Priority will be given for research experience in the following areas: pulsars, and associated phenomena, the interstellar medium as probed by HI, OH and/or molecular lines in the Milky Way and other galaxies, properties of galaxies, active galactic nuclei, cosmology, the Galactic magnetic field, or high sensitivity VLBI.
Technical knowledge of at least one branch of radio astronomy observing. Hands on experience at observing facilities a plus.
Special Conditions
This position is funded by contracts and grants and is contingent upon available funding.
Applicants for this position will also be considered for position #42574, 42474, and 42493.
