Post Doc Research Associate - Coastal Modeling in SEATTLE, Washington
Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 308037
Directorate: Energy and Environment
Division: Coastal Sciences
Group: Coastal Ocean Modeling
Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to conduct modeling research related to coastal circulation, estuarine hydrodynamics, and storm surge and climate impacts. As part of a well-established modeling team in coastal ocean modeling, selected candidate is expected to apply advanced coastal ocean models, such as FVCOM, HYCOM and ROMS, to simulate various coastal ocean phenomena and understand the effects of hydrological and atmospheric forcing on coastal processes. Specifically, the candidate will set up model(s) to simulate tidal and coastal circulation in Pacific Northwest and Alaska Coasts to support marine renewable energy project funded by the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), as well as macroalgal modeling project funded by Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) of U.S. Department of Energy. The candidate is also expected to participate in the model code development and modification for coupled modeling system and specific parameter outputs (e.g., turbulence and energy flux).

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
The selected candidate should demonstrate 1) solid modeling experience and knowledge with state-of-the-art coastal ocean models, especially unstructured-grid models; 2) strong writing and communication skills (good publication record); 3) strong problem solving capability and ability of working independently; 4) excellent scientific programing skills and knowledge of high performance computing.
Ph.D. in physical oceanography, geoscience, ocean engineering, civil and environmental engineering, atmospheric science or related fields.
