Job Description

Postdoctoral Fellow I

This is a full-time, 2-year term position.

Relocation assistance is available for this position.

UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.

Where You Will Work

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences.

The Geospace Frontiers section of the NCAR High Altitude Observatory studies the dynamics on the Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere, and the solar, magnetospheric and terrestrial drivers that cause its variability. Understanding space weather and space climate are the key challenges confronting our field. By space weather, we refer to short-term variability on global to microscales, while space climate encompasses systematic changes on seasonal time scales, solar-driven and anthropogenic changes to the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, and the propagation of solar effects to lower altitude.

The primary activities of the Geospace Frontiers section are: coupled numerical model development, observations of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, analysis of data from those observations and assimilating them into models, and synthesis of our models with others through collaborations with the larger scientific community. All of our models and data<https://www2.hao.ucar.edu/model-summary> are openly provided to that community, and to the general public. This is the core of our service role, but as a section of a National Laboratory, our service extends to support of workshops and collaborative visitors, postdoctoral, student, and instructional programs, the NSF CEDAR initiative, the NASA Living-with-a-Star program and Community Coordinated Modeling Center, and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

What You Will Do

This position offers post graduate scientific research in thermodynamics and composition of the upper atmosphere. The successful candidate will perform data analysis and modeling of the temperature and composition response to solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation and geomagnetic activity using Global-scale Observations of Limb and Disk (GOLD) data and suitable models. Research is directed by an NCAR staff member and includes pre-defined research and deliverables.

* Analyze GOLD data and compare with other datasets.
* Perform model runs, develop and analyze diagnostics for interpretations of results, and compare with observational results.
* Participate in team efforts with HAO researchers and the GOLD team to carry out integrated analysis of model simulations and data-model comparisons.
* Write reports and publish papers.
* Prepare for and attend scientific conferences.

What You Need
* PhD in physics, atmospheric physics, or a related field, within less than five years of the application date.
* Ability to pursue thermospheric and ionospheric physics research, including skills in modeling, data analysis, scientific computing and mathematics.
* Ability to work with and to further analysis techniques for satellite data.
* Strong computational skills are required:
* Operating systems: Familiarity with Unix/Linux (clusters and supercomputers)
* Programming languages: Proficient in Fortran and IDL (experience with Python, Matlab, or Mathematica potentially desirable).
* Ability to work with and perform analysis on large models and scientific data sets.
* Knowledge of thermospheric and ionospheric processes and modeling techniques.
* Good communication skills in presenting research.
* Some skill in writing scientific reports and articles.
* Knowledge of word processing programs for creating scientific/mathematical documents and presentation software.
* Publication record in the field of thermospheric physics, ionospheric physics, or a related field.
