Job Description

Outreach Coordinator

This is a full-time, 2-year term position with possibility of extension.

Relocation assistance is available for this position.

UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.

Where You Will Work
Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences.

The Outreach Coordinator position will be within the CISL Outreach, Diversity, & Education (CODE) group of the Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

What You Will Do
The position provides technical and logistical support to CODE's diversity, education, and outreach (DEO) service programs, communications efforts, and public-facing initiatives, as well as participating in them. The audience for CODE's activities include K-12, undergraduate, and graduate students, along with educators, CISL and NCAR staff and stakeholders, visitors, and the general public. CODE is particularly keen to engage and attract people from underrepresented groups to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines most closely connected to CISL's computational and data management mission in support of the atmospheric and related sciences. The position requires strong interpersonal, creative, and collaborative skills, combined with strong organizational skills, computer skills, and attention to detail.

Participate in CODE's education and outreach mission
*        Actively contributes to a supportive workplace community committed to the mission of developing a diverse and inclusive High Performance Computing (HPC) workforce through participation in organization-wide trainings and events, attendance at diversity-focused conferences, and conversation and provision of resources to staff members, where appropriate Support development and maintenance of technical and education outreach tools, including updating HPC-TV, exhibit updates and writing promotional items and curriculum supplements.
*        Coordinates and participates in development of educational activities and materials in collaboration with staff at the NCAR Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne, WY.
*        Provides support for CISL Visitor Programs (CVP) and student employee programs including updating materials and helping with assessment.
*        Assist with related DEO efforts by NCAR Education & Outreach, UCAR Center for Science Education staff, the UCAR Office for Diversity & Inclusion, and other peer DEO organizations. Efforts may include facilitation of activities for interns or postdocs, creation of video content, or participation in advisory panels and committees.
*        Speak with CODE's audience and help distribute relevant material to answer questions.
*        Monitors media and social media for information relevant to CODE activities.
*        Role model sensitivity and discretion while interacting with diverse students and staff.
*        Maintains CODE's web presence and evaluates its impact through analytics.

Support SIParCS Program
*        Supports the ongoing operation of all aspects of CISL's Summer Internships in Parallel Computational Sciences (SIParCS) including recruitment, candidate hiring process, and alumni networking.
*        Manages and revises the on-line application and selection process.
*        Directly communicates with applicants, recommenders, alumni, and mentors.
*        Provides logistical support for the program including: coordinating travel and office space; working with CU Conferences to provide intern housing; organizing and facilitating professional development workshops and presentations; coordinating applicant, intern and alumni tracking.
*        Recruits for the SIParCS program at job fairs and conferences, and through online social media networks.

Provide CODE logistical support
*        Support the planning, execution, and evaluation of DEO events by managing space reservations, creating and analyzing survey information, providing on-site support, and working with administrative staff to meet other event needs.
*        Maintain the databases of diversity, education, communication, and internship contacts.
*        Collect, record, and analyze survey information related to CODE's activities and programs.
*        Produces and updates print and other materials in support of the outreach mission. May include some graphic design duties.
*        Maintain inventory of educational supplies and materials.
*        May support visits to the NCAR Wyoming Supercomputing Center in Cheyenne, Wyoming by student groups and stakeholders.
*        May take photographs at outreach events and manage photo release records.

Supercomputing (SC) Conference and other event support
*        Assists SC Committee with planning CISL presence at annual conference including: exhibit/booth preparation including packing and shipping, assembly, disassembly; daily work inside the booth for the duration of the exhibit; onsite support for CODE Leadership and SC Committee.
*        Coordinates workshops at Community Colleges, Universities, Conferences, and other venues.

What You Need
*        Bachelor's Degree, or four to six years equivalent work experience in an area related to supporting diversity, education and outreach activities, either administratively, through event planning, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in these areas.
*        Demonstrated interest in or experience with outreach, education, and diversity activities.
*        Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Strong attention to detail.
*        Knowledge of Google Apps tools for calendar, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and video chat.
*        Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office tools working with Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentation applications, or equivalent.
*        Demonstrated experience maintaining databases, records, and tracking the status of requests.
*        Strong written and oral communication skills.
*        Ability to work independently, and also to work effectively in a team situation.
*        Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity in working in multicultural settings.
*        Ability and willingness to travel as necessary.
*        The following skills/experience are not required but would be desirable in a successful candidate:

Desired Skills
*        Experience in STEM education, diversity, outreach, or related activities at any level.
*        Experience using social media as a tool for marketing and building communities.
*        Familiarity with high-performance computing and atmospheric and related sciences.
*        Familiarity with atmospheric and related sciences.
*        Knowledge of basic web page design, graphic design programs, and using a web content management system such as Drupal.
