Dear Mailing list,

I am sharing the following job vacancy for:

Scientist - Model Uncertainty, VN18-26, Closing date: 15 August 2018

1. Position information

Vacancy No.: VN18-26

Department: Research

Grade: A2

Section: Earth System Modelling

Job Ref. No.: STF-SP/18-26

Reports to: Model Uncertainty Team Leader

Publication Date: 19 July 2018

Closing Date: 15 August 2018 2. About ECMWF

ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. ECMWF carries out scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of its forecasts, collects and processes large amounts of observations, and manages a long-term archive of meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and climate reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface.

For details, see www.ecmwf.int/ . 3. Summary of the role

The position is in the Earth System Modelling Section of the Research Department. The Scientist will work in the Model Uncertainty Team, in close collaboration with the Atmospheric Physics Team. The aim is to develop diagnostics of the statistics of perturbed tendencies generated by model uncertainty representations in ECMWF’s IFS model.

She or he will develop new software for computing and visualising the mean, variance and other statistics of model tendencies from ensemble forecasts, which are perturbed with stochastic representations of model uncertainties. This will enable detection and quantification of biases introduced in the tendencies through the perturbation methodology. Moreover, the successful candidate will diagnose whether differences in ensemble forecasts between single precision and double precision versions of the model are caused by the representation of model uncertainties.

Through this work, she or he will actively contribute to the development of improved configurations of stochastic model uncertainty representations available in the IFS model.

4. Main duties and key responsibilities

    * Writing efficient software for analysing the statistics of 3D model tendency output from ensemble forecasts
    * Quantifying how the statistics of tendencies in ensemble forecasts changes with the activation or modification of representations of model uncertainties
    * Providing input to design revised configurations for the representation of model uncertainties based on results obtained with the new diagnostics for perturbed model tendencies
    * Understanding the origin of differences between single precision and double precision ensemble forecasts that may arise from the representation of model uncertainties

5. Personal attributes

    * Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach
    * Dedication and enthusiasm to work in a team
    * Good interpersonal and communication skills
    * Ability to work efficiently and complete diverse tasks in a timely manner

6. Qualifications and experience required

Education

A university degree or equivalent in atmospheric science, oceanography, hydrometeorology or related areas of physics.

A PhD is desirable but not essential.

Experience

Experience in dealing with model data in various formats such as netCDF and GRIB.

Experience in the evaluation of model developments for atmospheric simulations.

Knowledge and skills (including language)

Knowledge of physical and dynamical processes in the atmosphere

Proficiency in handling and analysing large datasets

Very good programming and scripting skills (e.g. Fortran/C/C++ and python)

Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English.

A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage. 7. Other information
Grade remuneration

The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual basic salary will be £58,238.40 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-SP as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Full details of salary scales and allowances are available on the ECMWF website at www.ecmwf.int/en/about/jobs , including the Centre’s Staff Regulations regarding the terms and conditions of employment.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Length of contract: The contract has a fixed end date of 31 August 2019.

Location: The position will be based in the Reading area, in Berkshire, United Kingdom.

Interviews will take place in Reading, Berkshire between 21 st and 31 st August 2018. 8. How to apply
