Postdoctoral Research Staff Member - Cloud Processes Research and Modeling
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Science and Technology on a Mission!
For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the area of climate model development and validation; research activities involve testing and evaluating existing and new cloud parameterizations in both hindcasts and climate simulations with the new DOE Energy Exascale Earth system model (E3SM) against both satellite and field data. One particular research area is to understand processes that control the diurnal variation of precipitation over different climate regimes in observations and in models, as well as identify deficiencies and missing physics in E3SM to gain insights for further improving cloud parameterizations. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.

Essential Duties

  * Conduct process studies to understand the methods governing the diurnal variability of precipitation over different climate regimes in both observations and E3SM.
  * Utilize climate simulations and short-term hindcasts developed at LLNL for evaluating the Regional Refined Mesh (RRM) capability in E3SM to test and validate existing and new cloud parameterizations in E3SM.
  * Design and execute numerical experiments necessary for model evaluation.
  * Document research by publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  * Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
  * Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  * Recent PhD in atmospheric science or a closely related field.
  * Experience conducting research in atmospheric science or a closely related field.
  * Experience in one or more of the following areas: cloud processes, cloud and convection parameterization, or climate modeling.
  * Experience with data collected by the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program or other similar in-situ or ground-based observations, as well as satellite measurements.
  * Experience with model analysis and diagnosis of general circulation models and process models
  * Proficient verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by published results and presentations.
  * Ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance: None required.

Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
