Postdoctoral researcher in rates and causes of tree mortality globally
Why do trees die? How do the rates and drivers of tree mortality vary from the tropical rainforest to the boreal? What are the potential feedbacks with the carbon cycle and climate?
We are looking for a curious and self-motivated researcher with excellent data analysis skills for a 3-year (2+1) position on the ERC-funded TreeMort project (more.bham.ac.uk/treemort<https://more.bham.ac.uk/treemort/>/).  The researcher will compile and analyse a dataset of forest inventory observations with global scope, with the aim of advancing our ability to answer the above questions at the large-scale and to derive functions appropriate for use in global vegetation models. This information will be used to investigate the effects of tree mortality on forest structure and function, and help constrain projections of terrestrial carbon uptake.
Skills and Knowledge: PhD degree in a natural or physical science subject (e.g. ecology, environmental science, physics, maths), or similar/equivalent qualifications. Demonstrated strengths in statistical analysis and processing of large datasets is crucial, including the ability to use appropriate software (e.g. R, Matlab or Python). Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, and ability to communicate complex information clearly.
The researcher will be based at the University of Birmingham, U.K.
