We are looking for three highly motivated and qualified PhD candidates for the Which Plant Where Project (WPW) to work within the newly formed Centre for Smart Green Cities, Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

WPW is a five-year research program that brings together a consortium of researchers, government agencies, industry partners and nursery growers to increase urban green spaces resilience to climate and socio-environmental change. The collaborative team will align science with industry experience to develop tools and resources that will facilitate optimal plant selection for urban green spaces across Australia, while providing multiple co-benefits for our cities and its inhabitants.

Examples of potential research topics include: plant species tolerance; plant traits; urban forestry; urban green infrastructure; urban ecology; climate change adaptation; ecosystem services; human health; bioclimatic modelling; nature-based solutions for climate change: ecological design, etc.

Applications are open to international candidates as well as Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia.

Depending on the selected project the student will work under the supervision of Professor Michelle Leishman, Professor Lesley Hughes, Dr Linda Beaumont, Dr Rachael Gallagher, Dr Alessandro Ossola.

Scholarships are available to eligible candidates to undertake a direct entry into a 3 year PhD program. Each MQRTP scholarship provides a full-time annual stipend of AUD$27,082 (tax exempt), for up to 3 years (indexed annually). The scholarship is comprised of a Tuition Fee Offset and a Living Allowance Stipend.

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants are expected to have a MSc in ecology, botany, forestry, environmental sciences or related disciplines, a record of excellent academic performance and preferably, additional relevant research experience and/or peer-reviewed research activity, awards and/or prizes in line with the University's scholarship rating guidelines. Exceptional candidates holding a BSc with a strong publishing record are also encouraged to apply.
