I am searching for enthusiastic graduate students to join my research group at Northeastern University's Marine Science Center.
Our research in the Earth Surface Systems Lab examines hydrological and climatic variability and its connections to the natural and built environment. We are interested in how floods, droughts, and other climate-related hazards shape landscapes and societies across the land-sea interface. We combine geological and historical records with quantitative approaches to improve societal preparedness and response to natural hazards.
PhD students are encouraged to develop their own research questions and project ideas that could focus on, for example (1) sedimentary records of environmental change in coastal, lowland, or headwater environments; (2) contemporary, historical, or prehistoric human-environment interactions; (3) large-scale syntheses of hydrological and/or climatological datasets; (4) sediment transport and storage across the land-sea interface. Collaborative projects with other Northeastern faculty, particularly those in the Departments of Marine & Environmental Sciences or Civil & Environmental Engineering, are encouraged, and could involve hydrological modeling, coastal/aquatic ecology and biogeochemistry, or tracing contaminants in water and sediment.
To discuss possible projects, please email me (s.munoz at northeastern.edu<mailto:s.munoz at northeastern.edu>) with a brief introduction describing your background and research interests.
Prospective graduate students could pursue degrees in either the Department of Marine & Environmental Sciences (http://www.northeastern.edu/cos/mes/) or the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (http://www.civ.neu.edu/). Graduate program applications for research starting Fall 2018 are due December 15, 2017.
