Job Description and Duties
The Atmospheric Processes Research Section (APRS) of the Research Division (RD) is seeking a positive thinking, motivated, and enthusiastic Air Pollution Specialist to serve as an expert data analyst capable of interpreting large and complex high-resolution spatiotemporal air quality information to evaluate the relationships between air pollution sources and regional air quality. The mission of the APRS is to utilize air pollution measurements and advanced modeling capabilities to couple physics, chemistry, and atmospheric science to direct the atmospheric research needed to inform and support CARB's policy decisions, regulatory reforms, and air pollution mitigation strategies that are necessary to meet federal air quality standards and California's greenhouse gas reduction targets. Under the direction of the Section Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and conducting field measurement campaigns using ARB's advanced mobile measurement platform that incorporates state-of-the-science technologies to study air pollution emissions, air pollution transport, and atmospheric chemistry. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for utilizing advanced air analyzers to conduct various field campaigns and subsequent data analyses to address current and future air quality problems in California. The successful incumbent will work closely with CARB staff and will lead the analysis of large datasets using multitude of advanced analytical and visualization techniques (e.g., PMF, CMB, CALINE, CMAQ, Airshed Models) to address the knowledge gaps in air quality research, particularly related to agricultural and industrial sectors. The incumbent will have the opportunity to expand into additional research areas such as air quality impact analyses, long-term trends analyses, and new code/analytical tool development. The incumbent will interconnect in-house research efforts to existing regulations and policies, and will be responsible for clearly and effectively communicating the importance of the research findings to internal and external stakeholders. The incumbent is also expected to disseminate important research findings through peer-reviewed publications.
