Wed May 11 10:05:07 MDT 2016

POSITION: Postdoctoral Research Associate

STARTING DATE: After 1 June 2016

LOCATION:
Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Cornell University
Ithaca, NY 14853

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will work on improving long-range forecasts of
the start of the growing season in North America using ensemble-MOS
techniques applied to seasonal transitions. This project will advance
seasonal prediction by focusing on forecasts of the start of spring. It
will further apply novel statistical tools to develop probabilistic
forecasts from state-of-the art dynamical seasonal forecasts obtained
from the North American Multimodel Ensemble (NMME), and it will support
development of a new long hybrid statistical-dynamical reforecast
experiment. These research activities will be guided by efforts to
understand how ensemble size, composition, and reforecast period can
lead to improvements in seasonal prediction. Finally, although the focus
of this research is on seasonal transitions, the approaches here could,
in principle, be adapted to other aspects of the climate system, and to
other parts of the world.
The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to the
scholarly literature through journal articles and other peer-reviewed
publications. This researcher is also expected to participate in broad
dissemination of project findings and other outreach activities under
the supervision of Dr. Toby R. Ault, assistant professor of Earth and
Atmospheric Science. The position is a full-time short-term appointment.
Renewal of the initial appointment is contingent upon performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science, physical oceanography, or related
field (to be completed at the start of the appointment)
•Strong computational skills and proficiency in one or several
programming languages
•Experience with analysis of large climate model data sets
•Knowledge and experience working with numerical climate modeling software
•Demonstrated publication record of scholarly research
•Evidence of ability to work collaboratively as well as independently

SALARY & BENEFITS:
Competitive, commensurate with background and experience. An attractive
fringe benefits package is also available. Moving expenses to Ithaca
will be reimbursed according to department relocation guidelines for the
postdoc and his or her family. Allowances of $1000 for moving and
storing personal belongings are available, and a minimum of $3500 for
annual scientific travel support will be provided.

APPLICATION:
Applicants are to submit a letter of application, transcripts, CV and
the names and contact information of three references as one PDF file by
email to Dr. Toby Ault, Assistant Professor, Department of Earth and
Atmospheric Sciences, Bradfield Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
14853 at sc2727 at cornell.edu <mailto:sc2727 at cornell.edu>. The application
review process will begin on May 30th and the position will remain open
until filled.
