NSERC Visiting Fellowship in terrestrial nitrogen cycle modelling at CCCma, Victoria, BC, Canada

The Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis (CCCma, www.cccma.ec.gc.ca<http://www.cccma.ec.gc.ca>), part of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to develop and implement a nitrogen (N) cycle in the land surface component (CLASS-CTEM) of the Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM). Implementation of the N cycle in the CLASS-CTEM framework will allow it to interactively model: 1) the constraint placed by N limitation on photosynthesis, 2) the response of natural terrestrial ecosystems to N deposition and the response of crop systems to fertilizer input, and 3) the atmosphere-land exchange of N2O (a greenhouse gas) and NOx (NO + NO2). The concentration of NOx in the atmosphere is the dominant control on the photochemical production of ozone throughout most of the troposphere, with ozone destruction occurring at low concentrations of NOx and ozone production at higher concentrations. This work is key to the development of a more realistic representation of carbon cycle feedbacks and tropospheric chemistry in this leading earth system model.

The position will be based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the campus of the University of Victoria and is expected to start sometime during Summer 2016. The position is open to Canadian and international applicants who have received their doctoral degrees since June 2011 in a relevant discipline. Relevant earth system modelling experience is desirable. The hiring will be administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC, www.nserc.ca) under their Visiting Fellowship (VF) in Canadian Government Laboratories programme. The NSERC Visiting Fellowship is currently valued at CDN $50,503 per year or higher, based on relevant professional experience. The position is available for one year initially but is renewable for up to two more years.
