Position Description

 

The Department ofthe sustainability of social-ecological systems across multiple spatial and temporal scales. 

 

We are interested in candidates who can bring together quantitative and qualitative skills within an interdisciplinary research context.  The department is especially interested in applicants with quantitative skills that address the development of formal criteria and metrics, e.g., Life Cycle Assessment, to quantify and model sustainability.  Demonstrated effectiveness in integrating non-scientific information into the research process is required.  Interdisciplinary research includes an emphasis on an understanding of the  factors that constrain sustainability (e.g., population, consumption, climate, land and land-cover change) coupled with experience planning and implementing sustainability programs with communities, government and / or corporate organizations and other stakeholders, and experience working with ecosystem scientists and/or hydrologists, as well as scientists from social science and humanities, on interdisciplinary research (the ability to link science and practice).
Qualifications 
Required: 1) A Ph.D. in ecology, ecosystem science, or a related field.
2) Experience with analytical and modeling approaches for assessing socio-ecological systems and ecosystem services.
3) Demonstrated record of high-impact interdisciplinary research. 4) Evidence of effective teaching skills, an understanding of the land-grant mission, and a strong interest in contributing to our academic programs.
Desirable: 1) Strong publication record; 2) demonstrated ability or potential for generating external funding; 3) Ability to communicate scientific knowledge to a range of stakeholders; 4) Evidence of the ability to conduct independent and collaborative research with other faculty and natural resource professionals, develop and maintain an active research program, publish in leading scientific journals, and secure external funding to support research; 5) Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the graduate and undergraduate levels; 6) Experience fostering undergraduate research excellence is also strongly desired.
The Ecosystem Science and Sustainability department is closely associated with the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory. We are recognized for interdisciplinary research in socio-ecological function and system sustainability, such as sustainability of water, food, and energy systems from technological, social-ecological, and modeling perspectives. ESS faculty whose research lies at the interface of biophysical and social sciences have created open and flexible research and education programs with issues of sustainability as the core focus.

 

The Department offers a B.S. in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability and a B.S. Watershed Science as well as an M.S. in Watershed Science and a Masters in Greenhouse Gas Management and Accounting. Faculty members may direct graduate students in the interdisciplinary Graduate Degree Program in Ecology and the Watershed concentration of the Earth Science PhD. The Department has in excess of 300 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students.

 

The mission of the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University is to understand the function of ecosystems and watersheds across space and over time and interactions between social systems and ecosystems. We assess ecosystem sustainability by examining interactions within and between natural and human systems in the context of current stresses such as changing climate, species introductions, land-use change, and increased demand for water. The department uses state of the art technologies and approaches to provide quality education to future scientists, educators and decision makers, conduct cutting edge interdisciplinary research, and deliver culturally relevant outreach programs that empower our students and the general public locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Ecosystem Science and Sustainability department is one of five academic departments in the Warner College of Natural Resources.  The other departments are Geosciences, Ecosystem Science and Sustainability, Fish Wildlife & Conservation Biology, and Human Dimensions of Natural Resources. The Warner College of Natural Resources is also home to several interdisciplinary centers and programs, including the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, the Center for Collaborative Conservation, the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands, and the Colorado Natural Heritage Program.  In addition, the Colorado State Forest Service is embedded within the Warner College of Natural Resources.  Warner College is one of eight academic colleges at Colorado State University.  The Department and College are active participants in programs and courses at CSU’s  Mountain Campus, a 9,000-ft and 1,600-acre mountain campus and conference center.
