Department Profile The Department of Geosciences currently has 16
tenure-track faculty members and 7 full-time instructors. The department
offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in geoscience and a Ph.D. degree in Earth and
Atmospheric Science. Within Geosciences there are 4 areas of emphasis:
Professional Geology, Environmental Geosciences, Geography/Geospatial
Sciences, and Meteorology/Climatology. The Department was recently named a
Center of Academic Excellence in Geospatial Sciences by the National
Geospatial Intelligence Agency. In addition to the on-campus programs, our
distance learning programs enroll more than 400 undergraduate and graduate
students. Further information about the Meteorology program can be found at
http://geosciences.msstate.edu Position Function The candidate must have
practical knowledge of Geosciences and be willing to participate in
scholarly activities and collaborate with existing faculty in the fields of
Meteorology, Geology, Geospatial Sciences and Physical Geography. Areas of
expertise should include synoptic meteorology, although knowledge in
tropical, dynamic, or mesoscale meteorology is a plus. The successful
candidate will be expected to develop courses in his or her area of
expertise, including both online and on-campus offerings that support the
department's undergraduate and graduate programs. Essential Duties and
Responsibilities *Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses.
*Performs service activities such as colloquium coordinator, laboratory
supervisor, library representative, member of various university, college
and departmental committees. Such responsibilities will be assigned by the
Department Head or a designated representative. Committee assignments are
often elective. Minimum Qualifications A Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric
Science, Meteorology, or Geosciences/Geography with an emphasis in
meteorology. Will ABD's (all but dissertation) be considered? Yes Preferred
Qualifications Applicants with prior University teaching experience, prior
experience teaching online.
Since teaching responsibilities will include calculus-based courses, a
quantitative background is preferred. Knowledge, Skills and
Abilities Candidate
should be a dynamic educator with teaching experience preferred. Areas of
expertise should include synoptic meteorology, although knowledge in
tropical, dynamic, or mesoscale meteorology is a plus. Working Conditions
