Subject: Graduate student assistantship (U. Maryland): Micromet
Measurements of Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in an Agroecosystem
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) is seek=
ing a highly motivated doctoral or master=E2=80=99s student interested in i=
nterdisciplinary research in agro-ecosystems. This new project focuses on w=
ater management and greenhouse gas fluxes at a farm on the Delmarva Peninsu=
la. Our team of researchers (http://research.al.umces.edu/~davidson/ and ht=
tp://www.hpl.umces.edu/gis_group/) will be studying the impact of water tab=
le management through drainage on greenhouse gas fluxes (methane, nitrous o=
xide and carbon dioxide), on nitrate and phosphate leaching, and on socio-e=
conomic returns for farmers and society. We seek a student who will focus m=
ostly on micrometeorological measurements of nitrous oxide and methane flux=
es and who will contribute to the integrated team effort of this project. T=
he ideal candidate must have experience with eddy covariance or gradient fl=
ux measurements. Knowledge and experience in micrometeorology, soil biogeoc=
hemistry, hydrology, and programming using R are highly d=
esirable. A master's or bachelor's degree in a related fiel
d of the natural sciences (e.g. Environmental Science, Agronomy, Meteorolog=
y, Geography) is preferred.
Information on the UMCES graduate program can be found at: http://www.umces=
.edu/education/graduate_education. The student will reside at the Appalac=
hian Laboratory in Frostburg (western MD, http://www.umces.edu/al). At lea=
st three years of support are available through a research assistantship, w=
ith additional support possible as needed. The preferred starting date is J=
anuary 2017.
To apply, please by email to Eric A. Davidson (edavidson at umces.edu) a singl=
e PDF containing (1) a statement of interest, (2) a CV, (3) undergraduate a=
nd graduate school transcripts (unofficial copies are OK at this point); an=
d (4) contact information for three references. The successful candidate w=
ill be invited to formally apply to the UMCES graduate program during the m=
onth of September 2016.
UMCES is an affirmative action, EOE. Individuals with disabilities, vetera=
ns, women and minorities are encouraged to apply. This advertisement is po=
