The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) 
at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Professional Research 
Assistant to provide scientific and technical meteorological 
expertise.to develop and transition probabilistic hazard information 
into forecast operations, with particular focus on heavy rainfall and 
heavy snowfall. The incumbent will interact withNWSSOOs,NCEPStaff, and 
the research community to improveNWSforecaster’s generation and use of 
probabilistic precipitation information. The position is based at the 
Weather Prediction Center in College Park, MD.

The principal duties of this position are:

1. developing calibrated probabilistic guidance for flash flood hazards; 
(b) using feature-based post-processing approaches to extract and 
present information about heavy precipitation from storm scale ensembles

3. verifying and evaluate post-processing approaches in an operational 
environment

4. transitioning post-processing developments intoNWSoperations

5. presenting at formal scientific publications, and/or attending

Minimum Qualifications 	

The minimum qualifications for the position are:
1. A BS degree (or higher) in meteorology/atmospheric science.

2. General technical expertise in at least one scripting language such 
as Python, perl, shell.

3. Emphasis will be placed on applicants with considerable experience in 
areas of operational forecasts and warnings, convection-allowing 
numerical models/ensemble prediction systems, and creation/dissemination 
of probabilistic hazard information.

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills are highly desired 
and a strong ability to work in a collaborative team environment is 
needed for the position. Please describe experience with Linux (orUNIX) 
operating systems, software skills including programming and scripting 
languages, web page development, graphic design or illustration, and 
AWIPS2/N-AWIPSworkstations.

Normal working hours will be observed.

byWPCmanagement. The incumbent works under general supervision but is 
expected to work independently and determine action to be taken in 
handling all but unusual situations. This is a non-supervisory position.
