Description of Work Unit
The Boulder Branch of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the
Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a
professional scientific position for its collaborative research as a
Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Global
Systems Division (GSD) in Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder).
The Evaluation and Decision Support Branch (EDS) ofGSDdevelops systems
for operational users who require display of and interaction with
real-time weather data. In collaboration with the National Weather
Service, external contractors, and cooperative institutes,
anEDSpredecessor developed the basic Advanced Weather Interactive
Processing System (AWIPS) that is currently used by all operational
forecasters within theNWS. For example, a key function ofAWIPSis the
generation of warnings or hazard information for severe weather events
such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods. While the newAWIPSII system
is being developed by a contractor,EDShas been tasked with the
integration of a variety of applications to enable forecasters to work
more quickly and efficiently for both routine tasks and in critical
weather situations.AWIPSII uses service-oriented architecture and is
written primarily in Java/Eclipse and Python. An agile software
development approach is employed and feedback from users is translated
into software improvements in an iterative manner.AWIPSII is an evolving
platform into which advanced observational, forecasting, communications,
computational, and display capabilities can be integrated. Future system
and workstation activities will need to stay abreast of developments in
scientific visualization, spatial data representation and management,
software development and framework technology, as well as
three-dimensional display and volume rendering.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for participating in the
design and development ofAWIPSII applications using Python, Java, and
