<p>The Boulder Branch of the Cooperative Institute for
Research in the Atmosphere (<span class="caps">CIRA</span>)
at Colorado State University seeks to fill a
professional scientific position for its collaborative
research as a Cooperative Institute with the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (<span
class="caps">NOAA</span>) Earth System Research
Laboratory (<span class="caps">ESRL</span>) Global
Systems Division (<span class="caps">GSD</span>) in
Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder). The
Evaluation and Decision Support Branch (<span
class="caps">EDS</span>) of<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">GSD</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>develops systems
for operational users who require display of and
interaction with real-time weather data. In
collaboration with the National Weather Service,
external contractors, and cooperative institutes, an<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">EDS</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>predecessor
developed the basic Advanced Weather Interactive
Processing System (<span class="caps">AWIPS</span>) that
is currently used by all operational forecasters within
the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">NWS</span>. For example, a key function
of<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">AWIPS</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>is the
generation of warnings or hazard information for severe
weather events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and
floods. While the new<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">AWIPS</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>II system is
being developed by a contractor,<span class="caps">EDS</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>has been tasked
with the integration of a variety of applications to
enable forecasters to work more quickly and efficiently
for both routine tasks and in critical weather
situations.<span class="caps">AWIPS</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>II uses
service-oriented architecture and is written primarily
in Java/Eclipse and Python. An agile software
development approach is employed and feedback from users
is translated into software improvements in an iterative
manner.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">AWIPS</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>II is an
evolving platform into which advanced observational,
forecasting, communications, computational, and display
capabilities can be integrated. Future system and
workstation activities will need to stay abreast of
developments in scientific visualization, spatial data
representation and management, software development and
framework technology, as well as three-dimensional
display and volume rendering.</p>
