OREM, UTAH. The Department of Earth Science at Utah Valley University (UVU)
invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Physical
Geography, to begin August 2016. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D.
in physical geography or a closely related field, as well as a demonstrated
commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Expertise in GIS and
remote sensing is highly valued by our program. Responsibilities will
include teaching introductory and upper division courses in the candidate’s
area of expertise, as well as engaging in some combination of research,
supervision of undergraduate scholarship, activity in professional
organizations, continuing education, and service.
UVU is a fast-growing comprehensive state institution with more than 30,000
students. UVU values student-centered instruction and provides strong
support for undergraduate research and other forms of engaged learning such
as internships and study abroad opportunities. The Department of Earth
Science consists of 13 faculty and 2 full time staff members. We currently
offer B.S. programs in Geology, Environmental Science & Management, and
Earth Science Education. Our Geography program is growing, with recent
hires in physical geography and human geography, a new minor, a geography
education teaching endorsement, and development of a GIS certificate
program; in addition we are working to develop a B.S. in Geography. The
department has excellent facilities that include a 24 workstation,
dual-monitor, GIS laboratory and additional high-powered computer
workstations, survey-grade Trimble GNSS equipment, low altitude aerial
photography capabilities, and analytical facilities for geochemistry. Our
workstations are well equipped with geospatial and computational software
including ArcGIS, Global Mapper, ENVI, AgiSoft Photoscan, Adobe Creative
Cloud, Trimble Pathfinder and Business Center, and Matlab. The department
also has excellent ties to the University of Utah, Brigham Young
University, and Utah State University as well as local industry and
governmental organizations.
UVU is located in the Provo-Orem metropolitan area, with a strong economy
and a growing population of more than 550,000 residents. Orem sits at the
foot of the ~3600 m Wasatch Mountains, and offers truly outstanding
recreation opportunities including world-class skiing, mountain biking,
fishing, hunting, climbing, and boating within minutes of town. Salt Lake
City is 45 minutes north by high-speed commuter rail and has a major
airport and a vibrant cultural scene including highly acclaimed ballet,
outdoor concert series, professional sports and more (see

world famous National Parks, plus numerous monuments and historically
significant Native American archeological sites.
