California, the Sierra Nevada, and western Nevada are experiencing a fourth year of drought, in many respects the worst or among the worst droughts in this region’s recorded history. This event has motivated efforts to better understand the physical causes and social and environmental impacts of drought in the varied geographic and climatological settings within this area, and to improve adaptation and mitigation outcomes in different economic sectors.  The successful candidate will work closely to learn from decision makers in the region, informed by past findings and by ongoing and planned stakeholder interactions.  Active involvement is expected in all these time frames.  The position is supported by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) and will be managed by the California-Nevada Applications Program (CNAP), one of a dozen teams nationwide funded by NOAA under the Regional Integrated Sciences and Applications (RISA) Program.  CNAP has core centers at Scripps and at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Reno.
 In conjunction with the CNAP team, the post-doc will help coordinate the maintenance and potential expansion of user engagement activities.  These include translation and interpretation of the current state of climate science pertinent to this area, usage of and access to observations, status of monitoring, knowledge of regional climate and its variability, and any other information about climate, to assist in management and planning.  The post-doc will organize stakeholder meetings, webinars and other outreach efforts to extend attention to those less well served by present programs and institutions, such as small water systems with limited resources.  The candidate is expected to be familiar with the many different types of impacts of drought found throughout the affected area, and the cultural and social context that influences preparation and response to drought.  The candidate must have a familiarity with climate variability, the physical and social landscape of California and the surrounding region as well as national trends in environmental science and policy.  Strong organizational and communications skills are required, as well as the ability to interact comfortably with a very wide range of audiences to generate sustained dialog.  The applicant must be willing and able to travel throughout California and Nevada to engage stakeholders.
Candidates must have a completed doctoral degree, in the field of climate or related physical science, or in the social sciences with a very strong emphasis on climate.
