Dear member of AGU's expert outreach network (AEON):

Science plays a huge role in our daily lives, communities, and plans for the future. Yet many members of our communities can't name a single contemporary scientist, much less know one personally.

Make yourself a visible and approachable local resource by connecting with a community group. Be the scientist that members of your community know personally. Learn about the issues that interest or affect the people around you and make a connection through science.

This November, AGU is encouraging Earth and space scientists to create relationships with groups in their communities over science. We believe that building connections between local scientists and communities is a fundamental way to increase the widespread understanding of Earth and space science and its value.

Will you reach out to a community group during our Talk with the Public week (9-15 November)? **Please note: we understand how busy you are, and we aren't asking you to commit to giving a talk during this week?or at all. What we hope is that during this week you will find and get in touch with a group in your area to let them know you'd be happy to be a science resource. There are many directions you can take from there?helping facilitate a book discussion, participating in a Q&A session, giving a tour of your lab, or giving a talk.

If you're interested, please consider signing up for our webinar<http://www.mmsend61.com/link.cfm?r=1686986877&sid=54474087&m=7154680&u=AGU_&j=22361439&s=http://sharingscience.agu.org/sign-up-for-connecting-with-your-community-webinar-part-of-talk-with-the-public-week/> on Connecting with Your Community on Wednesday, 22 October from 1:30 P.M. ? 2:30 P.M. EDT. We'll discuss how to reach out to a community group, things to consider before connecting with a community group, preparing to give a public talk and how to successfully cultivate dialogue with an audience. To sign up, follow this link<http://www.mmsend61.com/link.cfm?r=1686986877&sid=54474088&m=7154680&u=AGU_&j=22361439&s=http://sharingscience.agu.org/sign-up-for-connecting-with-your-community-webinar-part-of-talk-with-the-public-week/>.

Ph.D. Opportunities in Terrestrial Paleoclimatology

As part of an expanding Terrestrial Paleoclimatology Research Group in the Dept. of Geology at Baylor University PhD studentships are available starting in August, 2015. Currently, there are eight faculty in this group (http://www.baylor.edu/geology/index.php?id=64481) with broad expertise in paleopedology, sequence stratigraphy/sedimentology, paleobotany, organic geochemistry, biogeochemistry, isotope geochemistry, geomorphology, geochronology, and Quaternary environments focused on forwarding paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions, including deep-time. Existing research projects represent an exciting opportunity to join an internationally established research group addressing issues of global importance such as extreme climate variability, the associated response of lacustrine and hydrologic systems, ecological changes, hominid evolution and elucidating the record and forcings for continental-scale climate variability.

Candidates should have at least an undergraduate degree in geology or geophysics, or in a related area, with demonstrated numerical and scholarly capacity; and a propensity for field and laboratory work.

Further information about the Dept. of Geology PhD program is found at http://www.baylor.edu/geology/index.php?id=62331. Application deadline is January 15, 2015.

Cluster Hire in Geographic Ecology: three positions at the rank of
Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor http://GE.ou.edu <http://ge.ou.edu/>

The Department of Biology at the University of Oklahoma invites
applications for three tenured/tenure-track faculty positions at any rank,
beginning in fall 2015. We are searching for creative, collaborative
thinkers who use integrative approaches to address fundamental ecological
questions at regional to global scales. Our ultimate goal is to enhance our
expertise in geographical and aquatic ecology toward predicting ecological
and evolutionary responses to global change. The search is open to
theoretical, lab, and field biologists working on any taxa. In this cluster
hire, we seek:

? A *Geographical Ecologist* who studies phenomena at multiple spatial
scales toward understanding large-scale patterns and processes. Innovators
in biogeography, macroecology, bioinformatics, and global ecology are
especially encouraged to apply.

? An *Aquatic Ecologist* who studies freshwater ecosystems toward
predicting the role of changing water supplies on ecosystem services.
Innovators in biogeochemistry, ecological networks, ecological genomics,
river-reservoir systems and land-water interactions are especially
encouraged to apply.

? A *Physiological Ecologist* who studies the origin and maintenance
of ecological traits and their ultimate role in the dynamics of population
and ecosystem responses to a changing environment. Innovators studying
traits involved in metabolic, stoichiometric, thermal and water-related
variation and adaptation are especially encouraged to apply.

We are especially interested in candidates who use or combine some of the
following three approaches in their work. The first is development and/or
testing of models and theory that connect phenomena at scales from local to
global. The second is an integrative use of data?from gene frequencies to
biogeochemistry, species distributions to climate past and future,
functional traits to landscapes?to advance theory and identify novel
patterns and processes. The third is a desire to apply this research to
ameliorating outstanding ecological problems, including climate change,
biodiversity loss, dwindling water supplies, and the degradation of
ecosystem services.

The University of Oklahoma is committed to building an international center
of excellence exploring the geographical ecology of our evolving biosphere.
Successful candidates will join colleagues across campus, including cluster
hires in the EPSCoR initiative *Adapting socio-ecological systems to
increased climate variability. *Our shared goal is to build theoretical and
empirical bridges across the sciences, to predict the interplay between
biotic and climatic changes, and to better steward our natural resources
and services. Join us.

*How to Apply*

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. degree and a record of outstanding
achievement as evidenced by publications. Preferred candidates will have a
promising (assistant) or externally funded (associate/full) research
program and the ability to lead interdisciplinary, multi-investigator
projects across a range of geographic scales. Each individual will be
expected to provide excellent training for graduate students and postdocs,

Cluster Hire in Geographic Ecology: three positions at the rank of
Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor http://GE.ou.edu
<http://ge.ou.edu/>

=C2=B7 A *Geographical Ecologist* who studies phenomena at multiple sp=
atial
scales toward understanding large-scale patterns and processes. Innovators
in biogeography, macroecology, bioinformatics, and global ecology are
especially encouraged to apply.

=C2=B7 An *Aquatic Ecologist* who studies freshwater ecosystems toward
predicting the role of changing water supplies on ecosystem services.
Innovators in biogeochemistry, ecological networks, ecological genomics,
river-reservoir systems and land-water interactions are especially
encouraged to apply.

=C2=B7 A *Physiological Ecologist* who studies the origin and maintena=
nce
of ecological traits and their ultimate role in the dynamics of population
and ecosystem responses to a changing environment. Innovators studying
traits involved in metabolic, stoichiometric, thermal and water-related
variation and adaptation are especially encouraged to apply.

We are especially interested in candidates who use or combine some of the
following three approaches in their work. The first is development and/or
testing of models and theory that connect phenomena at scales from local to
global. The second is an integrative use of data=E2=80=94from gene frequenc=
ies to
biogeochemistry, species distributions to climate past and future,
functional traits to landscapes=E2=80=94to advance theory and identify nove=
l
patterns and processes.

Each individual will be
expected to provide excellent training for graduate students and postdocs,
and contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching (one course per
semester) in the department.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, complete curriculum vitae,
research and teaching statements, and selected reprints/preprints as PDF
files to Chair, Geographical Ecology Search Committee, at
*biologyjobs at ou.edu* <biology at ou.edu>. Applicants should also arrange to
have three signed letters of reference sent to *biologyjobs at ou.edu*
<biology at ou.edu> or Department of Biology, 730 Van Vleet Oval, University
of Oklahoma, Norman, OK 73019, USA. Applicants at the rank of Associate
Professor or Professor may submit names and contact information for three
references in lieu of letters. Visit us at *http://biology.ou.edu*
<http://biology.ou.edu>*.* Screening of candidates will begin *3 December
2014* and will continue until the positions are filled.

*The University of Oklahoma is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity
employer and encourages diversity in the workplace. Protected veterans and
individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.*
