*Job Summary*
The duties of this position are to provide technical leadership,
oversee program development (annual & multi-year), guide NREL’s Grid
Integration program direction, ensure alignment of NREL’s program
with DOE’s priorities, and ensure high quality technical output from
NREL’s Grid Integration program activities by accessing the most
appropriate array of R&D, Analysis, and Market Transformation
capabilities within NREL for the benefit of DOE.
NREL’s Grid Integration LPM shares responsibility with several other
members of NREL’s senior management team for effective utilization
of NREL’s new Electricity Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) and
the new Controllable Grid Interface (CGI) facility at the National
Wind Technology Center in Boulder Colorado.
Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
• Manage all aspects of NREL’s relationship with DOE in the area of
Grid Integration, and maintain strategic partnership with DOE as one
of their key Federally Funded R&D Centers (FFRDCs)
• Achieve high level of customer satisfaction by DOE, especially
with respect to the leadership of OE and EERE
• Lead collaboration between NREL and DOE, and represent NREL on all
matters related to Grid Integration. Provide thought leadership to
OE and EERE in workshops and strategic meetings on future Grid
Integration related efforts
• Oversee all aspects of NREL’s Grid Integration program planning,
including: development of project plans, new project proposal
development, and establish a comprehensive Annual Operating Plan
(AOP) and long-term strategic plans
• Team with NREL Centers and Offices to ensure effective resource
planning and allocation to accomplish Grid Integration project
objectives and deliver high quality outcomes
• Ensure high degree of rigor in management of change for all Grid
Integration projects throughout the period of performance
• Actively manage NREL’s portfolio of Grid Integration projects and
investments at NREL to maximize NREL’s value and impact to DOE’s
mission priorities, including proactively proposing
project/portfolio changes in partnership with OE and EERE leadership
at DOE
• Provide high degree of fiscal responsibility for NREL’s Grid
Integration program financial matters, including disciplined
management, execution, and monitoring of internal and subcontracted
activities
• Manage NREL’s Grid Integration program to operate within scope,
schedule, and budget in the project plans
• Team with other LPMs to coordinate program planning & execution,
and implement Best Practices for Program Management
• Support Center Directors to ensure compliance with NREL health,
safety, and environmental policies and procedures in order to
maintain a safe work environment
• Coordinate NREL’s response to Funding Opportunity Announcements
(FOAs) and Lab Calls (Lab RFPs) for which NREL is eligible to submit
proposals to OE and/or EERE
• Partner with relevant centers and NREL Business Development
leaders to develop impactful industry partnerships that align with
DOE priorities and leverage DOE’s investments at NREL
• Provide final approval of all proposals submitted to DOE Program
FOAs, Lab Calls, and/or any DOE Planning activities to ensure
technical quality and eliminate potential duplication with any
previous/existing work
• Plan, arrange, and host visits/meetings at NREL by OE/EERE staff
or leaders, industry and/or associations, and universities to
strengthen relationships and enhance NREL’s Grid Integration program.

*Required Education, Experience, and Skills*
Relevant PhD and 15 or more years of experience or equivalent
relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Master's Degree and 18 or more years of experience or
equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 20 or more years of experience or
equivalent relevant education/experience.
Expert understanding and application of project management
principles, concepts, practices and standards. Expert knowledge of
technical field and related disciplines. Often exhibits an
exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness.
Outstanding interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and
communication skills.

*Preferred Qualifications*
Demonstrated ability to manage and oversee complex and high-impact
technical programs, and to design/implement effective work breakdown
structures with an effective hierarchy of task leaders, project
leaders, and sub-program managers.
Demonstrated ability to think strategically, lead strategic
planning, and build consensus. Ability to propose and develop
new/novel concepts and approaches where little or no precedents exist.
Ability to make difficult decisions. Capable of working
independently when needed. Highly effective teaming skills,
including a proven ability to form and lead high-impact,
cross-organizational teams.
NREL LPMs must be able to work effectively with NREL Executive
Management, Center/Office Directors, other LPMs, and the leadership
and technical staff at DOE EERE and OE.
Extensive travel is required in this position, including frequent
travel to Washington DC. 30% travel is typical.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability and proven track record of sponsor or customer
satisfaction in managing one or more technical projects or programs
with combined annual budget greater than $30 million.
At least one area of deep specialized knowledge and expertise
related to power systems R&D, grid integration, transmission, or
power systems modeling.
An established positive reputation with NREL’s DOE clients within OE
and/or EERE.
A relevant technical degree, PhD preferred, in electrical
engineering or a related applied scientific discipline, for example:
mechanical engineering, process dynamics/control, physics, or
material science.
Experience at successfully developing, forming, and leading one or
more interdisciplinary project team(s) that included national
laboratories, industry, and universities.
