conducting fundamental research on soil carbon cycling that supports the =
Climate and Land Use (CLU)=20
R&D program and externally funded USDA grant. The overarching goal is=
 to study the interactions=20
among mineral assemblages, microbial communities, and carbon forms that w=
ill ultimately inform=20
next-generation carbon cycle models. The research will encompass lab and =
field studies and will=20
employ a combination of spectroscopic, microbial, and isotopic techniques=
. Field studies will be=20
focused on climo-chronosequences along the California coastal range near =
Santa Cruz and Mattole,=20
CA. Laboratory studies will focus on constructed soil microcosms, and wil=
l involve the development=20
and use of microbeam Raman and infrared (IR) techniques as well as isotop=
e tracing to visualize the=20
fate of carbon in the three dimensional structure of soil.=20=20
