The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
in Boulder, Colorado has an immediate opening for a full-time
professional research assistant in science writing to contribute to the
communication of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) and CIRES' missions, research and other activities, with an
emphasis on work in the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) and
National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC).
Responsibilities will include---but may not be limited to---the following:
? Regularly report and write news and feature stories for many outlets,
including NOAA line office websites (Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric
Research and National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information
Service), ESRL and NOAA Boulder websites, CIRES website, and existing
print/online publications (e.g., Spheres)
? Coordinate with a broad array of partners to ensure that NOAA Boulder
and CIRES science reaches diverse audiences (funders, agency leadership,
media, general public). This will involve identifying high-profile
stories and writing press releases to share/elevate with NOAA.gov web
team, NOAA public affairs (news releases), CU-Boulder news team and others.
? Attend and participate in meetings and activities of the Boulder
Outreach Coordinating Council
? Contribute social media blurbs and web stories to existing channels
(NOAA, NOAA line offices, NESDIS, CIRES, CU-Boulder)
? Generate and maintain updates to fact sheets
? Develop and maintain an up-to-date awareness and understanding of the
major research emphases and activities of CIRES and NOAA scientists in
ESRL and NGDC, as required to carry out the above major responsibilities
Requirements:
? Bachelor's degree in science-related field, masters preferred
? Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
? At least three years of experience writing about scientific research
for lay audiences; Earth science research topics preferred
? Ability to initiate and self-manage projects
? Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and to work
collaboratively with scientists and communicators to finalize drafts of
stories and other materials
? Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Facebook,
Twitter, Google
? Excellent organization and time-management skills
The position will be filled as a Professional Research Assistant in
CIRES at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and will be eligible for
employee benefits, including 22 days of vacation (for 100% position) per
year). Screening will begin immediately and continue until the position
is filled. The position will be located at both the David Skaggs
Research Center in Boulder and CIRES on the main University of Colorado
